Would a nearby sink be the water source?

Usually, an adapter is used to tap into the toilet's water source.

Do you mean a water outlet or an electrical? If you are referring to water, usually these units come with a Y adapter that splits the existing water tank hose.

If you are referring to electrical, this is obviously a bigger job but still doable if you or someone you know is a bit of a DIYer. Probably you have a GFCI outlet by your sink. Depending on the layout of your bathroom, you can pull off the baseboards and then fish a new wire along the bottom of the wall. Tap into that existing electrical and install a new GFCI beside the toilet. Reinstall the baseboard and your drywall patching will be minimal to none. I did this in three of my bathrooms and it took me about 1.5 hours each.

it's strange that they do not have a choice for toilet shape to fit: round vs elongated. The round shape may be the default choice, but be careful if you have elongated shape toilet.

Calm down, it's smart but there is no mention of any app or it being part of the IoT (Internet of Things).

Unless it contains such high end technologies that can hack your home network automatically just to send info china...
At that point why not just build a camera into the seat claiming it's an infrared sensor, while in reality it's actually filming you rush to the seat, drop your pants and raise hell from the depth of your guts.
In which case, might as well hit that last mile by sending you the footage for a ransom to keep it secret.
Just like all those ransom emails using hacked accounts claiming they have your password, your computer, and you getting yourself off while your computers camera and screen was being recorded.
In all seriousness not everything from china is made to invade your privacy.

Toilet has a water source, that's what you'd tap off of.

No, these things need electricity to operate, that's what the OP is describing.

Kits usually include a T-shaped connector.
The water source for your toilet bowl would split the water to both the toilet and the bidet.
