Review shows they are wd101emaz drives inside, and they seem to be quite hot. However, I couldn't find any information about this drive, except posts on Reddit which suggest those are Enterprise/ Data Centre drives, based on R/N number "UVXHA9".

Not so hot then? Looking for one of these drives but I don't see much interest in this one

These drives are designed to run at temps up to and around the 70 Celsius mark. FWIW I'm currently running a preclear on one of these in my server and it's a couple of hours in holding at 31 Celsius with the fans on low. These drives do get warm in the enclosures they ship in but nothing above design point and that's to be expected of a drive that has absolutely nothing cooling it whatsoever.

Yes, but can not return once the retail box is opened. Would be able to exchange if there is a manufacturing defect.

Any Blank media (digital memory, hard drives, etc.) only in unopened condition can be returned.

Fair enough. It's good to know where you stand regarding returns / exchanges etc. That certainly is one thing that Amazon do well.

The WD Elements to me have a big advantage...they're not encrypted. The my book ones are. I agree that if you shuck it , it doesn't matter. I once had an encrypted one that died on me, the drive was still fine but the enclosure board was dead. I saved the drive but lost all data on it.

need some expert advice frm fellow RFDers. How do you gents preclear your drives if I may ask? I searched online and see many options (smartctl, WD software, badblocks, etc.) I am swamped. While I guess it likely comes down to personal preference, RFD may have some insights into the pros and cons of different approaches. Anything you reply is a learning opportunity for me and very much appreciated!

I have an unraid server so I just plug them into there and use the preclear tool. I'll preclear before shucking to make sure the drive has no issues then I'll pop it in the drive slot.
