[Amazon.ca] $162.99 - Seagate IronWolf Pro 4TB NAS HDD (ST4000NE001)

Ships and sold by Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B084ZV8YW8/

Not a huge discount, but listed close to Amazon's historic low (from October 2020: 159.99) according to CamelCamel.
There are definitely cheaper NAS drive options both in the form of Seagate's non-Pro line and from other vendors. So this deal will appeal to some, but certainly not all. Overall, I find it to be a decent price for a well reviewed drive that sports good specs for home or small business NAS systems .. and possibly other applications.

Drive specification sheet from Seagate (multiple drives listed in the PDF): https://www.seagate.com/files/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/ironwolf-pro-18tb-DS1914-17-2103US-en_CA.pdf

Model Number : ST4000NE001
Interface : SATA 6Gb/s
Capacity (TB) : 4
Cache (MB) : 256
Spindle Speed (RPM) : 7200 RPM
Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF, hours) : 1,200,000
Max. Sustained Transfer Rate OD (MB/s) : 220
Acoustics, Seek (typical) (dBA) : 30

A few retailers have discounted this drive:

While the price is ok, I think people are comparing it vs shucking which is much cheaper.

As I don't like shucking I would have considered this deal if it wasn't one of their higher end lines. While I fully understand why some people need the performance, my RAID is just mainly for storage - I think Backblaze data has shown the more expensive drives don't necessarily result in better reliability (ie, considered the low end ST8000DM002 vs Exos ST8000NM0055).

Anyway, it's an ok deal - but posting tech stuff here is tough as too many computer dudes waiting for great prices. If it was some oxo spoon people would be all over it.

If you just want a NAS rated drive, and don't need the performance from Seagate's 7200 RPM drive vs. WD's 5400 RPM drive, then the 4TB WD Red is on sale for today for $109 + ~$10 to $15 shipping at Canada Computers

https://www.canadacomputers.com/product ... _id=165747

WD Red Plus 4TB is available for $10 more.

Edit: The regular "red" series = SMR. If it's "red plus" then that's CMR.

WD Reds are SMR drives, AFAIK. I would buy Seagate Ironwolf NAS, which is CMR drive, $109 from Amazon.ca.

For those don’t mind open box, I bought a pair of the same drive from Amazon warehouse for $105 each. They both have 5 or 6 power on count and a few hours of on time, and 5 years of warranty.

Upvoted for the effort put into the post.

But when you can (used to be able to) shuck a 4TB for $80 this is cold.

Honestly, at these per TB prices, get an 8 bay NAS and run raid 6 on shucked drives (after Chia dies off and prices return to normal).

The same drive with 5900 RPM is $109.99, which is all time low. You don't need 7200 rpm in a NAS. I have a NAS full of these 5900 rpm drives and it saturates a gigabit connection. If you run 2.5 or 10 Gb network maybe a 7200 rpm is worth.
