There's nothing wrong with that. I do too for longer trips, especially if traveling down to the states.

Shameless plug.

I recently bought a Garmin with built in Dash cam & drive assist features & wound up using a Ram Mount system from GPScity.ca to hang the Garmin from my rear view mirror. The Ram system keeps the dash cam "permanently" aligned.

When I bought it, I bought one of mounts in this thread as well as the other style from Garmin.

I've got both styles of the Garmin friction mounts available. I never got around to posting here on the BST or on kijiji. If anybody in the GTA wants one, send me a PM.
Social Distancing means staying apart 2 meters or 6 feet, the depth of a grave.
Get closer and you might have one foot in the grave. (Pass it on)

I had one of these ages ago when GPS devices for the car were the size of bricks (and it looks exactly the same as what I had). It would keep flying right off the dashboard whenever I made any kind of sharp turn.

Use a $2000 phone for GPS, that’s a waste.

Exception: some newer Garmins use data for live traffic.

You guys can download offline data on your phones, just do it at home and use your WiFi. Even for a trip to the states, it may be a bit more data but still nothing crazy. I think all of GTA is like 200mb.

No need for dedicated GPS anymore. Boomer technology.

May I ask what Garmin model you are using?

Won't help you with live traffic or accident avoidance/rerouting

I also never liked keeping my phone plugged in for long drives and GPS screens are typically larger.

I use Google maps for short trips and bust out the GPS for long drives.

Good as a phone mount? My $2 vent mount isn't cutting it
