Onterrible
OP I just have to say I commend you for effectively handwaving away the "iffy security" of this Eufy product, as if the entire point of the product isn't security itself lol. Probably why it's 50% off. Just was kinda funny.

I say this as someone with a Eufy doorbell cam.

Hmm. I like that it fits your existing deadbolt.
Could be good for monitoring someone's apt/condo remotely.
Open remotely via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi with the eufy Security app, Alexa, and the Google Assistant. Or use the wireless keypad or the backup key.
Let in friends and guests without having to get up, or unlock for your cleaner or kids while you’re at work.
Not clear how this is supposed to work:
A built-in sensor detects when your door is closed and locks it automatically behind you, keeping your home secure even when you’re in a hurry or your hands are full.

No mention of a contact sensor to attach to your door to determine open/closed status.

Could you elaborate on why this isn't good?

I have this. Installation was super simple, i liked that the outside of the door maintains its default look and that I didn't have to rekey anything. Inside it works great, very smooth operation and keypad and app are reliable. Just make sure your deadbolt operates smoothly and doesn't bind, if it does, the device will detect it and jam and the automated locking and unlocking functions won't work.

I confirm the above. I installed mine yesterday. Lock had a tough time with wifi setup, likely because there are too many wifi networks in my area and it seems to limit the number it displays.

Bought and now returning. Installation was easy and all and quality feels good, but the WiFi locking/unlocking does not work well (doesn't work at all with the Apple Watch app and rarely works with the Eufy phone app on iPhone). If you lock/unlock manually or use another app like Google Home, the Eufy app isn't smart enough or too slow to know the true 'state' of the lock. Would not recommend.

I bought this few weeks ago and it never connected to the app but I still get the notification of locking/unlocking which is strange. The app is still saying the setup hasn't been completed due to calibration no matter what we I do so going to return it.

Any insights into how this feature works?

There is no extra sensor other than the one built-in with the latch/deadbolt (close/open status is based on the closed/opened position of the actual latch).

So I'm assuming the consensus is that this smart doorlock isn't worth it. Can anyone recommend me a smart lock with a key (for the senior folks at home)?

Look at Weiser. I have the zwave versions that connect to my SmartThings. I have read that some Wi-Fi versions of smart locks chew thru batteries.

We use wiser for all our rental properties. Re-keying the lock is amazing. The smart key is the weak part of the lock. You dont even need to bump key it. You can stick something in the key hole that is strong and you can just force the lock open. It ruins the lock but it gets you in the house. I have 3 ruined locks that this happened with. One on a trashed rental property that we were working on. Someone broke open the lock and went in and stole about $1100.00 worth of my power tools. For my own home where we do not need to rekey the locks we use schlage.

Weird. I had none of these issues with the app once past the inifial wifi connection setup issues.
