Purchased...thanks OP, would have preferred left handed but the price is right, any suggestions for an all around rod leaning towards the heavier side for the very occasional Pike ?

Shimano Compre, 7ft Med/Heavy fast. This rod will do double duty for all kinds of things. Definitely a staple in any boat.

Depends but I would say no, he would prefer sth bigger. If he do it from shore he will likely prefer spinning wheel, from boat likely a big caster. check out what he has right now, fisherman can be picky(very).

These are very good reel as I own 2 of them right now. The shimano SLX series are also a great choice.

Darn.. Looks like it is OOS at the moment. I was initially looking at the Shimano Curado 200 but I think if this one comes back in stock, I'll pick it up.

Thanks OP. Totally thought this deal was a unicorn but snagged (lol) one just now for $130.30. Like a previous poster I wish it was lefty but for the price I'll take it. There wasn't a delivery date when I added it to cart but it said coming soon. Hope it delivers!

Edit: it took me occasional refreshing since yesterday for it to show up
.

**** FYI for everyone here. *****

Ontario Licence-Free fishing week starts JULY 3/2021 to JULY 10/2021
Fish without a licence

Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario without buying a fishing licence, during:

Family Fishing Weekend in February (February 13-15, 2021)
Mother’s Day Weekend in May (May 8-9, 2021)
Father’s Day Weekend in June (June 19-20, 2021)
Family Fishing Week in July (July 3-11, 2021)

Follow fishing rules

Licence-free periods remind us of the value of Ontario’s recreational fishery, and the importance of keeping it healthy for future generations. You must:

follow conservation licence catch limits
obey size limits and sanctuaries
follow the fishing regulations
https://www.ontario.ca/page/licence-free-family-fishing

July 2021 Licence-free fishing week events

Bonus points if you find blinky the fish. :)

I have an Abu. Ambassador from 1997 with an Ugly stick. Good for Pike, Bass, Lake Trout, Walleye.
The quality of the rod and reel are very good. Back then the adjustable brake was in it's infancy, not nearly as good as now. The plastic brake lock (on/off )wore out so I taped it off , still works well enough.
Used a friend's Diawa with adjustable brake a couple of years ago, impressive.
