[Amazon.ca] AIRTHINGS Corentium Home , Radon Gas Detector 150$ (~25% off)

I was looking for a long time for this Radon Gas Detector, good price drop this morning ATL. A base radon evaluation kit cost around 70$ an take couple of month to have the result. A lot more value with this device.

Every time I see a post about radon detectors on sale I +1. Everyone should know how much radon is in their living environment. Burying your head in the sand is not a solution!

This is only a tester. Normally Radon air gets into the house from cracks and shower from underground and causes lung cancer for non-smokers (obviously after some long time). But the test result has to be above 200Bq/m3 to be considered a concern.
Paying $150+ for a TESTING unit to get around 50 Bq/m3 from most homes (above picture) is not worth the hassle. Again this is a testing unit not a solution. Still need to pay over $3000+ to deal with it.

The EPA has set the concern level to 150 and WHO to 100. You won't know your level without testing. Then you can decide whether to mitigate or not. My levels occasionally get above 150 but rarely hit 200. Winter months are when it's worse, so I find long term testing useful

Is this Corentium version better or the Airthings wave?

25% off, seems to be ATL, I remember seeing a thread about this a while ago but don't think the price was that low!

If you can afford the wave plus I would hold out. The extra features it has including historical values is worth it.

CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature, radon and pressure.

Very happy with our purchase.

Edit, just noticed those VOCs are higher than usual. Held a birthday party yesterday for my daughter. Lots of gifts. May be off gassing of the new toys.

You should see when we paint a wall or forget to close something. It's very sensitive.

I should add that we had high readings. Our home has wood structural basement floor with crawl space underneath. Good vapor barrier as done ourselves with care. Still needed more attention. Redid the sealing around some of the piles, redid the sump pit seal etc. Happy to have the detector and would do it again.

I’ve had my Airthings wave for about 2 years now. The average has been around 160, with it being higher in the colder months. Is it worth it to mitigate? I know Canada health says 200 but other sources vary at a around 100 to 150.

I WFH in the basement where the sector current is.

I would try to mitigate. It's the sealing of the basement that does a great job. My levels jump up when it rains which makes sense because the water pushes the radon out of the ground and the sump pump is working.

That's about same as my house was, the issue is with newer houses they are sealed so tightly that for my house all three floors were pretty close in readings. So don't go and assume the floors above are better. I have young kids so I decided to do mitigation by myself for around $400 bucks vs $3000-$4000 quotes I was getting. Luckily my 2016 house was built with a radon mitigation piping already available so I just bought PVC and a radon fan to pipe it out of the house. Brought my numbers down to 60 avg with an odd 2 or 3 day spike to 100s in winter.

Around $1000-$1500 here (Halifax) for a professional install. DIY for $500~

I see the need to test but for $150 I’d rather get the cheap mail-away long term test ($40) and put the remaining $110 toward the extraction fan and piping.

Wow..didn't think I'd see this on RFD. My house was 325 with a long term test from àlpha track. It was $50 one time deal. Since then I mitigated myself. $250 vs $4200 from a quote. Totally agree that radon is a mystery for most people. Everyone I talked to around here has no clue...nor at work.(professionals) my levels are at 9 now...and I have piece of mind. It was so astonishing that no one has a clue I'm thinking of going into business for mitigation. I've had friends parents die of lung cancer and never smoked in their life. Having a unit will give you continual levels....something that is necessary after mitigation.(for me anyways) good luck everyone .
