Keep in mind that a water filter also reduces scale buildup. Over time, not using a water filter will increase the wear and tear on your fridge. Then if a problem occurs the manufacturer will say the warranty is void because you didn't follow instructions in the manual.
Are you sure about that? There are filters specifically designed to reduce scale buildup, but these filters aren't claiming to do that. Also, I think you'd have to have some pretty hard water for scaling to become an issue within the warranty period.

My ice tray is full of scale and I've always replaced the filters on time. Doubt they de-scale very well.

Yes, it does not impact your fridge's operations. This is only for water taste.
Unless he has an internal ice maker that uses the filtered water .

Most do, even then, ice maker and water is coming out of same unit.

In case it helps; this thread reminded me I've never changed my filter in my 3 year old subzero. I ended up ordering this for $16 today. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07BYT ... UTF8&psc=1
Thx...lmk if it leaks at all which can be an issue with these non OEM filters from what I've been reading! Think I will just order one too as it's been 3 years at my end as well!

Still better deals than these on Amazon. My KitchenAid uses the Maytag UKF8001 (or equivalent) filter.

3 pack from Royal Filters, made in the US/Canada for $45 on Prime with free next day shipping.

Cheapest Amazon model is $17 each ($51 for 3) or $22.50 for the Premium.

Then, not changing the filter would affect the ice maker even if you don't use the water dispenser.
