Once there was a real deal in front of me I did not cherish. Not until it went OOS did I learn to regret. There's no greater sorrow. If heavens would grant me another chance I would buy buy buy. If I must put down a quantity, I hope it is 10000

God damnit. My Phenom II X3 720 has been solid for ages. I don't have the funds to upgrade to a full rig, nor do I really need to. But it's starting to run it's course. I think I'll have to go for this. It's hard to justify the money on upgrading my entire rig with current DDR4 and GPU prices due to miners.
I hope I'm not making a mistake by dropping 100$. But really, my system performs rather well with my Phenom II. It's old so it's only at 3.2GHz now (gets unstable at higher OC), so hoping this upgrade will last me for a while on my main workstation.
I don't play games, nor edit frequently. But Linux has terrible multi core support, so I see some serious CPU spikes with many browser windows open.

Phenom II master race reporting in. 1055T. Are you using the popular 965?carmageddon wrote: ↑ I have an 8 year old Phenom II, which can still more than handle anything I throw at it, including supported latest AAA games.

I recently paired it with a Vega 56 (got it as a gift). Beast of a combination. Pity most new developers are dropping support for the CPU. Perhaps, it is time for an upgrade.

What do you mean dropping support? Do you mean most video games?carmageddon wrote: ↑ I recently paired it with a Vega 56 (got it as a gift). Beast of a combination. Pity most new developers are dropping support for the CPU. Perhaps, it is time for an upgrade.

Phenom II doesn't support SSE4.1 instruction set, so recent AAA releases have been incompatible with it. Mafia 3, and few other games were patched after months to work on Phenom. Assassins Creed origins, however, does not work. Ubisoft refused to patch it. Safe to assume far cry 5 won't work either.

I would agree that that would be the step I would take first before processor upgrade, if given a choice between the two.tvisforme wrote: ↑ We have a FX 6300 in a system with 8GB DDR3 and a GTX 760, which our teens are using for gaming (Overwatch, PUBG, CSGO etc) and video editing. Based on the specs for the two processors, my gut feeling is that we'd be better off buying another 8GB RAM instead of this processor. Does that sound right to you?
