One of my neighbors' son works in the AMD marketing department.

This is a just a marketing ploy to entice customers that were already considering the R9 3600X/3700X/3800X and making them reconsider to spend more for the 3900X because of the big 'discount sale' and also any potential customers that are looking for a 'deal' that they cannot miss. Testing out the strategy in Canada because USA would be too many orders and margins will take a big hit. Marketing psychology 101, humans are easily manipulated.
My dog's neighbour's cat's owner's cousin who lives next to a drug's lord's stripper girlfriend's brother who also works for AMD is calling you a liar!

I'm hoping your neighbours' son who works for AMD marketing department is legit though.

Lol, so, we are getting our 3900x, according to him? Get that in writing. Why wouldn't they get the other retailers, like Newegg, in on the fun? The upsell strategy might work because no one's buying the 3800x?

why would they do that if 3900x were all sold out @ MSRP?

I get price errors happen damn they should have corrected it by now and they haven’t cancelled order yet nor changes the price. So if they fight us on this we should bombard their customer service lines.

However the 3800X is a stupid part. It is de facto a higher clocked 3700X with a higher TDP and absolutely not worth the $550. $90 for a digit swap 3700X -> 3800X and higher base/boost which is negated by a simple OC. Might as well buy a 3700X and all-core it up to 4.2 and you have a 3800X equivalent. This is why I will not accept a resolution that involves a 3800X... but $100 discount on a 3700X I would take, though I can nearly guarantee this won't be happening.

That claim sounds far-fetched.

Anyway, the current price for this item is equivalent to ~US$500 minus 12% at current exchange rate coincidentally MSRP for the 3900X minus ~12%. I'd doubt profit margins taking a big hit. [fixed; the argument for the ~12% off is an expected (guessed) retail price drop, whose explanation follows]

What we saw last time AMD launched a new Ryzen generation was a permanent drop on retail prices of 7 to 12% (typically) on retail price shortly after release date (4 to 5 weeks later). Just plot the price history charts for your favorite previous generation Ryzens (partpicker) and notice the evolution of the floor price.

I'm probably as excited/anxious as you. We all wait with bated breath.
