Hot! Would have jumped on this if I didn't pick up a 3700X for $300

I am surprised that their newer CPUs don't seem to be out there too much considering they were released some time ago

For gaming with a decent GPU, running multiple VMs, video work then yes. For general use/browsing only slightly (and most of that if you have a fast NVME ssd). If you have to ask, you're probably ok with what you got

Still rocking my 4670 here, no plans to upgrade unless I can find parts dirt cheap.

Ha i'm on the same boat. 4670k overclocked to 4.4ghz still going strong...
my video card was the bottleneck so i upgraded to a 5700 xt last year
am able to run triple A games with no hiccups (e.g. Cyberpunk) . Some RTs games (e.g. civ) that are more cpu intensive does slow down during the turns. able to run all applications.

I'm surprised at how long i've had this thing for but i havent hit a cpu bottleneck yet... holding out for a good deal and honestly i'd buy a 10700k or 10600k on the 2nd hand market (new, but people selling due to the gpu bundle sales). both of those intel options offer higher benchmarks and at similar prices; but due to the fact that everyone's an AMD fanboy, prices are pretty favorable for intel.

Ordered for pick up at my local MemEx. Received an email saying they have few but all are open boxes and these CPUs are discontinued, so they do not anticipate any additional inventory in the future.
Should I still pick it up considering it's open box? any cons on an open box AMD CPU?

They are clearing the warehouse not to get stuck with 2 year old stock before Q4.
The 3800X was overpriced compared to the 3700X and it was not recommended
for the marginal improvement.
AMD is better than Intel but there is a battle in the lower end segment for the
budget builds.
