I prefer the DT-770 headphones to these. I have both.

The ATH-M50x have some "nice to have" features, such as three different cords, a detachable connector, and they're foldable. In term of audio quality and build quality, I prefer the DT-770s. I'm unsure if you can find the DT-770 in the $100-150 price range though.

Are these better or Sony MDR1A in terms of comfort and sound quality? Looking for something more neutral sounding and without the exaggerated bass.

If you're looking for neutral with a budget price then I would get the 40x over the 50x
