[Amazon.ca] Blue Buffalo Puppy kibble food 11.7 kg - $34.99 (minus any s&s)

Amazon has this Puppy Food on sale for $44.99 with a $10 coupon. This food is usually $54.99 at Walmart, PetValu, etc. versus the $59.98 regular on Amazon.

There has been record Puppy ownership during covid, and I fall into the statistics.

But does Blue Buffalo have a good reputation?
I cook my dog chicken breast and beef when I can afford it and feed her Go! Carnivore which fixed all of her tummy issues she had on other brands. So I am reluctant to try other brands.
I read not so great things about Blue Buffalo unless they have changed in recent years?

It was recommended to me, so I think it's got a decent reputation. It also has 4.5 stars on Amazon, but to each their own. For this money, it's far superior than other brands.

My puppy doesn't seem to have any issues with it, but the vitamin and fatty acid additions do make him pee bright yellow lol. Not an issue, but shows it's loaded with many things that should help him grow.

Reminder that your dog is part of your family. Google Blue Buffalo, there have been lots of issues. Our vet has specifically said to avoid. Is it really worth it to save a couple bucks?

Mind letting me know what the issues are and the evidence to support it?

What do you recommend over this? Even the ingredients of Go! Carnivore dog food seems worse...

Most vets will recommend Royal Canin, which is worse. So is it really worth talking to a vet if all they're going to recommend is the worst of the bunch?

Bold claims, but I'll be asking my vet the same questions. If I'm getting vague answers, not switching.

Honestly, this got me thinking, and have been reading up on this. Essentially all kibble is junk. Good to know.

I come from a vegetarian household, so getting this was a stretch. I'd like to know what the best I can get that's away from the fridge. It's not ideal, but the best I can do to own a pet. People are welcome to have us over to feed the guy, but he'll become dependant on you lol

Our puppy has been eating royal canin and he's now 5 months old. No issues. We supplement the kibble with boiled chicken breast, peas, carrots and a little bit of Greek yogurt with probiotic.

Royal canin was recommended by our breeder first, not by any vet we visited, and our breeder has been doing this for over 25 years.

Can you tell me what's so bad about Royal canin? Where the evidence that it's the worst?

That is incorrect. If you’re using this to rationalize feeding your dog trash please look into it.

It costs more so he googled what he wanted to be true is the evidence.

This person gets it. Cooking homemade is the best thing you can do and use kibble to supplement the rest (especially when it comes to vitamins and minerals as it is hard to get them everything they need).

My very honest opinion is that ALL kibble is overcooked/nearly incinerated proteins of varying low standards. I actually don't think there is a truly trust worthy kibble out there. I try to pick the best of the bunch, one with no recall history, I try to do Canadian owned to support local and also hope for locally sourced, but at the end of the day... the companies are taking proteins and fats that are suitable for an animal to consume. I know they aren't getting top quality. Therefore I try to pick up the slack as best as I can.

I choose Go carnivore because when we were on Acana, my dog had bad stool, and pancreatitis once or twice.

As to why we don't do Royal Canin because in the past they relied very heavily on grains and were light on actual protein.

Sorry, before I forget... peas are controversial for a dog's diet. There is evidence to support that they did not evolve to have a use for it and infact legumes in general *MAY* interfere with taurine absorption. Maybe you want to look into that?

I guess it depends on the breeder, vet and owner. I myself don't like the ingredients in the Royal Canin food hence why I choose to buy another brand. We had a dog many years ago and we kept having complications with Royal Canin food no matter what we supplemented it with hence why for our new pup, we stayed away from Royal Canin just from past experience.

Everyone has their own opinions on which one is the worst and which is the best. I don't buy Blue Buffalo for my pup either if that makes a difference. Other RFD users have also stated why Royal Canin is bad.

lol the cost is not the reason I don't buy Royal Canin. In fact, Royal Canin is one of the cheapest whenever I buy the biggest size available at PetSmart for dog food.

Aside from preparing the meal yourself, Orijen is probably one of the top alternatives.

By far the worst thing you can do. Most vets in Canada will never recommend raw meat diet or other holistic options, they only gun for Royal Canine, which is garbage. Probably has to do with subsidy/kickbacks they get from them.

Sorry that what the professional with years of veterinary experience recommends isn’t sold for $15 at Nofrills. Lol

Not about the price. I paid for the most expensive foods for my dogs, still doesn't equate to raw diet, which is what I feed exclusively now. Expensive but worth it, zero issues.

My point is that most (all) vets are on Royal Canine paycheck.
