I actually use them to attach to kit that I leave on shore when I wade out for fishing. They're a good alert if someone decides to touch your stuff when you aren't near by.

What's the difference between brown bear poop & black bear poop? Brown bear poop has berries in it, black bear poop has bells...

People put them on their off leash dog... help hear where the dog is anyway. Ineffective for bears though.... not only can they not hear them (with wind, rivers and other noises), they get curious to what the sound is. Plus, they're super annoying to hear when you're out for a peaceful hike. For Black bears... stand your ground, make noise, look big (put your backpack above you), throw rocks to scare the bear off. For Grizzlies or Cougars though, you're on your own!! Carry bear spray... then spray it on yourself for seasoning. =P

Stand your ground.
Back away only when the bear stops its approach.
Make yourself look bigger by raising your arms and jacket, and/or standing on a rock or stump.
Yell “Hey bear” loudly.
Get your bear spray out of the holster and into your hand. Remove the safety latch.

…Follows You
Stand your ground.
Try to appear large by holding up your arms and jacket, and/or standing on a rock or stump.
Back away only when the bear stops its approach.
Intimidate the black bear by making yourself look bigger and making noise (wave arms, shout, clap, bang stick).
Stay together.

…Continues To Follow You
Stand your ground and stay together.
Intimidate the black bear by making yourself look bigger and making noise (wave arms, shout, clap, bang stick).
Prepare to fight or use bear spray.

…Charges You
Stand your ground.
Remain calm.
If you have bear spray, spray it directly at the bear.

…Makes Contact With You
FIGHT BACK with anything at hand (knife, sticks, rocks, binoculars, backpack or by kicking).
DO NOT play dead.

This starts to sound like the anti mask arguments.

It’s true they are not 100% effective. Nothing is. But they improve the chance of not surprising a bear. So for negligible cost and very little effort to put one on you or your dog, it’s a no brainer really. In my humble opinion. I do also carry bear spray but prevention is better than cure.

Thanks OP. Got one before they went OOS.
This is great for camping trips (along with bear spray which I got last year) and the dogs.
Prevents my dogs from killing rabbits in the backyard too.

These bells are part of the kit recommanded in the bush. It's good to mention to peoples that it's not a substitute to bear spray but don't tell to don't buy one. Bells are to prevent, spray is for defence. It's like telling peoples "don't buy smoke detectors, buy extinguishers"...
