[Amazon.ca] CrazyCap 2.0 Deep UV Purifier & Self-Cleaning Water Bottle - 2 pack - $49.77

Not a bad price considering singles cost $70 upwards. You're just stuck with these 2 colors though.

When Costco carried this 2-pack it was at around $70 regular price and $50 when it goes on sale.

I bought these because I often leave my water bottle in the car for a couple of days before changing the water. And I'm not the guy who would bother to use a brush to clean my water bottle so I guess a UVC cap bottle is for me. Not planning to use it for drinking water off lakes or streams. Just to prevent that musky smell from stale water and to make sure my bottle is always clean.

I got mine at Costco and I love it. I use it everyday.

The bottles are good quality and at $25 each, you're not even paying much extra for the UV feature.

UV light kills bacteria and viruses.

It doesn't mean this product is necessary, but it's real.
I aim to be inclusive and considerate of others in my posts. If I fall short of that mark, feel free to let me know in good faith, and where appropriate, I'll edit my posts. Thank you.

It's definitely real, but my issue with this product is that I've been drinking non-UV-sanitized water my whole life and have never gotten sick from it (that I know of). What's the point of this?

I know UV light kills but concern on the size of that light and the size of the bottle, the distance to the bottom of the bottle.

I've been using a LARQ bottle for a year now and I initially thought it was all hype and no fun. It does work... The fact that it uses a UV light helps reduce the germs because I rarely have to clean it. My previous S'well bottle would need constant cleaning. If I didn't clean it daily, the interior would get all dirty. :/ With the UV light, I can clean the bottle after a week or two if I feel like it because the UV seems to kill the germs. The big plus of the LARQ is the battery can run for months without recharging. I probably charge it once a month or so.

I personally bought the CrazyCap from Costco at a higher price. The bottles do the same thing overall than the LARQ but the only differences I've noticed are:
  • The battery of the CrazyCap doesn't last very long. That means you have to charge it daily or at best, after 2-3 days.
  • The mouthpiece (from where we drink) has a metallic taste. I never noticed this from the LARQ.
Overall, the UV seems to really work. The water won't taste better than what you put in it but it stays cool and the taste won't get worst, even after a while. Gotta love tech gadgets! :D

Even if this works, UV light bulb does not last forever. It needs to be replaced once in a while. Not sure how long this bulb lasts in its effectiveness and how much it would be to replace. Or do you have to replace the entire cap itself..... Or just buy a new bottle.

Does the UV light add any actual benefit?

I've read reviews of these in the past and every single one of them sounds like the reviewer was being showered with money by the manufacturer, going into detail the cleaning modes and reciting bullet-points about UV light destroying germ DNA. Yet absolutely nothing about whether it provides any real benefit in the cap of a water bottle, or if - most likely - it's just a gimmick selling point.

You can't necessarily credit the UV light for the reduced cleanings. The liner of the bottle may have something to do with it as well... after all, you did say that you noticed that one had a metallic taste while the other you didn't notice one so unless the UV light is adding something to the taste, something else may be at play here.

The problem with most of these types of UV products is that they might not have enough light strength as well as the exposure time in order to do much good. Many of the industrial UV water purification products have UV tubs that go deep into the chamber giving all of the water an more or less equal amount of UV light. I don't believe any of them use a single point of UV light.

real independent testing goes a long way - otherwise it's a gimmick

A lot of people calling UV lights a scam have never had to use lake/well water for your home. It's a standard part of your water filtration system.

UVC light strong enough (and at the right wavelength) is extremely dangerous to our eyes and skin. There's absolutely no way this bottle emits the right wavelength or strength to do anything at all.
