How come this doesn't have more up-votes?

Thanks OP!

Very good price, even though the MX500 was $79.99 recently.

This is a good choice for an older laptop with Sata 2 or a Steam drive.

So?

People were going nuts when it was at $80.

amazon-ca-crucial-bx500-480gb-internal- ... 9-2233873/

That was over 6 months ago... not so hot anymore.
It's 15% off the regular price.
It's the entry level line for Crucial. DRAMless. 3 years of warranty versus 5 years for the MX500.
Prices are expected to fall further in 2019.

I read one SSD company lost 60% profits in Q1 (maybe Samsung's ssd division?). It's pretty dire for SSD makers. There will be a new type of NAND out soon (higher data density so it'll replace all the current SSDs. So now they're just liquidating stock of the older tech...Everyone doing it at once...
RAM has also taken a hit, back to 2016 prices, I had no idea that 2017-2018 prices were stratospheric (didn't have a need to buy).

There's another thread on this BX500/MX500 matter: amazon-ca-crucial-bx500-38-43-54-66-99- ... 2284836/2/

Too late for that. MU had already dropped about 50% from its highs. Now is actually a time to look at buying as the news of the new NAND technology is already baked into the stock (which was what caused the drop in the first place)!

Not at all.
"Prices are expected to fall further in 2019" means the prices of NAND memory and indirectly SSDs are expected to fall.
Not necessarily profit margins/earnings/stock prices.

sorry noob here, what is the difference between MX500 and BX500?

Looking to buy one but not sure which one has better bang for the buck.

MX500 has DRAM whereas BX500 doesn't. DRAM let's your hard drive operate faster and last a lot longer as it uses volatile memory vs. the NAND modules (what gives SSD's its capacity). If you don't care about drive failures (putting this in a shitty computer you don't use), if you're not going to be writing lots to the disk (not your main operating system disk but a data storage device only) then go for the BX500. If you are buying this hard drive to run Windows/MacOS/Linux/UNIX then get the MX500. Or wait until the price drops even more as the year progresses...

If you want to learn more about DRAM, here's a 4-minute vid (last minute is just ads). The conclusion is to not cheap out, but we are RFD here right ;)? Cases can be made for cheaping out on this one (previous paragraph):

I had 2 BX & both failed within 6 months...maybe just bad luck but crucial replaced both with MX versions & they are still going strong

I'd strongly suggest you avoid buying MU right now.
