App doesn't need to be opened, it just needs BT on your phone. I have had this since it was on trial in the US and it's been good for turning on stuff on the way home at night. :) I haven't tried to link it up to my car directly.
This space for rent.

I don't understand the use case for this. It's just a dongle for your car, which you can get cheaper ones from anywhere, but locked to Alexa only. Good luck playing Google Play Music, YouTube Music, etc. then.

I just speak those commands directly to Alexa on my phone, handsfree. Not sure what this device brings.

You still need to take your phone out, unlock with whatever then push the app then speak those commands, with this you just speak those commands Truely handsfree.....

I see. I typically always have my phone out in the car (navigation, music).
Also you can replace the default voice assistant on your phone from Google to Alexa.

Hands free...

Alexa, turn on the porch lights
Alexa, arm my alarm (Ring)
Alexa, is my garage door closed? (Ring contact sensor)
Alexa, set the living room temperature to 24 degrees
Alexa, navigate home (Pulls up Google Maps on the android HU)
Alexa, call Grandma
Alexa, text [my wife] I love you
Alexa, text [kids] to setup the dinner table
Alexa, add X to my to-do / shopping list

Amazon emails Alexa suggestions all the time

Most of the phones support hands free ok Google commands and specially if you're already using your phone for navigation it works even better.

Yes you get a dedicated device here but to others' point it is a redundant device to do something you can do with your phone or android auto interface.

Why can’t you just use Alexa app on phone and turn on the option for it to trigger by saying “Alexa”

I did that before this came out, I can tell you is way more hassle free with this device, no need to mess around with hotspot...
Another point for this device is so that you don't need to use your phone as much especially when you are driving, less distraction and not to mention less chance for getting handheld device ticket.

I had one of these to try out for a week and didn't find much use with the device. It's pretty limited in the actions it can accept.

I'd only recommend it to anyone who doesn't already have bluetooth in their vehicle.
