For a regular home user this is pretty overkill price wise. I grabbed one of the chinese projectors for 79.99 on sale and it's been working flawlessly and the picture is crystal clear and I use it to play Mario Kart on my switch frequently with the kids.

Not on sale right now, but if you don't want to spend a thousand dollars almost on a projector the above is a safe bet.

I owned a few projectors. My suggestion to someone want to own an enter level (<$300) projector is: buy a TV.
Let me explain why: you will get a decent 60” tv for ~$200/300? But with ~2/300 you will not get a decent projector. My first “usable “ project is a Optoma 1080p (not those “1080p supported”). It still not work during the daytime. I have another $250 made-in-China projector eats dust at the corner, too blur images.
Projectors essentially like cameras, start to shine when they are at least $600(like the one OP posted here, and Epson is good brand ), and ideally $$$.
If you don’t plan to invest a lot, then buy a TV instead to save the hussle.

it all depends on the application, my living room is East facing and I normally use my projector in the afternoon and evening and my Epson HC2040 is totally adequate brightness-wise as long as I close my blinds and adjust the brightness mode as needed.
I also have two other TV, one in Kitchen and one in the bed room for all the other situations.
Best deal (from almost 20 years ago): 2 boxes (20 reams of 500) of HP 92 white papers from staples for $7.00
Back when staples price match and takes off 50% of the price difference. (2004)

The HC2100 is a very good projector for the price. You will enjoy the colours.

However to get significantly better black levels and pop you will have to spend much more, over $2500.

The advice to buy a TV is completely illogical imo. The 2100 can easily make a 140"+ screen. This completely changes the viewing experience. If you have a dark room, a good projector cannot be beaten for viewing experience.

Lol these chinese mini projectors are garbage and don't even belong in the same conversation.

This is a reminder that 1080p on a supersized 100" to 120" screen can look great if it's a lazy watch with friends enjoying a game.

If you're sitting alone, popping Adderall, watching sub-atomic perturbations in the screen image, you can get laser-projection 4K devices for three to four grand.

Always happy when these devices go on sale.

Thanks for taking the time to respond - I am contemplating the same decision right now

Can you buy a decent 60" TV for $300 (other than the very tough to find Walmart clearances specials?)

They absolutely aren't though, the picture is fine it has built in USB/SD readers as well as speaker output and can be connected to even usb powered speakers. The picture is super crisp/clear and has no issues in the over a year I've had it with extended use. What exactly is garbage about it?

probably the main difference is having an actual warranty and being able to find replacement parts if something fails when that warranty ends. I own an Epson 2040 and have loved it for the past 4 years. It is bright and works great even for some light gaming. The bulb needed replacing recently and I found one quickly from a reputable retailer. If you want something cheap that will perform ok and go right to the landfill when something goes wrong then go ahead and get a cheap Chinese knockoff. I would recommend spending the extra $$$ and getting an Epson. I have zero regrets and love mine to this day.

The picture is still much dimmer than a good projector, like say the Optoma HD146X. Plus the latency is much much worse, like in the 120-140ms range bad. Really though if you use it in a nice dark room and don't play fast paced games the value can't be beat.

I think "fine" is relative. I've owned a $99 no name projector like mentioned above, and an Epson Epson Home Cinema 1040.

If you have no point of reference against higher end projector or really DGAF and just want a large image on your wall then yeah I totally agree it is fine. However if you care about 1080p, darker blacks, clearer picture and a desire to use it outdoors before the sun is completely set then you probably should get a model like OP is showing us.

For outdoor use:

Can’t decide for more lumens and less contrast on the HC1080 for $750 or the HC2100 above.

Any idea how both perform?

If I wanted to substitute my tv for a projector, what's a decent amt of $ to spent? Am I looking at upwards of $2,000?

I have a cheap projector (native 720p). It serves the purpose for when Im working out, but Im thinking what the "next level" is.

We have a Epson 1060 and use it for outdoor movies on a 120" screen, and absolutely love it. I would recommend the more lumens for outdoor, but I am no expert.
