I have a USB DVD writer, and it uses a USB 2.0 interface. Average data rate on 8x DVD drive is about 8 Mbytes/sec.. USB 2.0 speed is 53 Mbytes/sec.. The "USB 3.0" interface is pointless.

USB 3.0 increases the power out to 900 mA.
USB 2.0 has power out of 500 mA.

Some portable USB DVD drives may need an external power supply or connect to another USB port when connected to a USB 2.0 port.

Good point, but those are minimums - many, if not most, USB 2.0 ports can output more, especially on computers with more than one USB port or mixed USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports where you would likely use the portable DVD drive. Mine certainly works fine on USB 2.0 on my laptop, although it has an auxiliary power port (no auxiliary power supply provided with it though).

Old tech but consider there are audio books only available on cd's from the library. One of those books might cost easily over $15 so the DVD pays for itself. I had a bluray i paid over $100 for which is junk now due to extremely crappy cable port design.

I have an old DVD burner in an enclosure that I'm tempted to replace with this, but then again it still works and I only use it once every few years.

Only one cable necessary? I feel like the last portable drive I have needed a y cable.

But man were they reliable...SCSI just trumped IDE back in the day...especially getting around that stupid infamous "Buffer underrun error." In my case at least.

Those days "coasters" costed you a lot of money LOL

I ordered this, and canceled it. I have enough old pc hardware gathering dust already. I do IT work and even I can't see much of a use for this these days.
