[Amazon.ca] Fire TV Stick 4K Max with Wi-Fi 6 $54.99 (Not ATL) + Additional $7 off with code for first time order pick-ups

Not ATL for the 4K Max. Historically predicting it might go on sale for $45 during Black Friday, but if you need one now this is a good deal. Cheaper than the regular 4k version which is on sale for $59.99 currently.

Bonus: combine this with the PICKUP7OFF coupon posted by @Shadyb for additional $7 off and it's pretty close to ATL. Code is only applicable for first time pick-up orders. YMMV. Check if your account is eligible by clicking on https://www.amazon.ca/b?node=87672853011.

Also, same price at The Source.

I like the Fire Sticks. They're a good value in price/performance, and the advertising-heavy UI doesn't bother me. But 8 Gb storage on this highest-end model just doesn't cut it in 2023. Time for a refresh.

what are u installing that takes up more 8gb space apps really don't use much storage.

u can always add a usb hub and use flash drives/sd cards/external hdd to add as much space as u want.

this model just came out at the end of 2021 there not going to release a new model for at least a couple years.

plus the fire cube that they just release months ago and cost 3x what a 4k stick cost only has 16gb of storage so even if they were to release another stick i don't see them going much beyond 8gb without upping the price for it quite a bit.

Agreed. I suspect it's to limit torrent streaming services tho.

I'm debating as well because the non-Max is pretty snappy, especially compared to my Chromecast with Google TV; however, my Chromecast can play my Google Play movie library in 4k while the Firestick can't.

My Fire Stick has about 8-9 streaming apps plus a few accessory apps to make it easier to use. It has 0.85 Gbytes left out of 5.35 Gbytes app memory. The last time I tried to update an app it failed from lack of memory, and I had to uninstall one.

8 Gbytes is not enough. Maybe it's ok as a cost-saving limitation on the Fire Stick Lite, but on the 4k Max it's inappropriately small.

How does this compare to a Chromecast with Google TV? I need to be able to setup a VPN on the device to access US content.

like i said even the cube that goes for 189 cad only has 16gb. i'm doubting they would release a 4k with more then 8gb and even if they did make one with 16gb they would probably double the price to bring it closer in price to the cube.

just add a usb hub and a plug in a usb stick to add more space.

The Chromecast with Google TV and Firestick 4k work well with a VPN. I assume the Max would work as well or a bit better than the non-Max.

I have a USB splitter and hub for the Fire Stick, but it would be foolish to store apps in the USB memory. Too slow, too fragile, and FireOS will soon necessarily lose support for that when they update to the next base version of Android beyond Android 9. Not to mention that update will make the OS take up more memory.

Seriously, time has moved on from 8 Gbytes storage for the OS and apps. That's a 2014 phone, or a 2016 Android media player. You wouldn't buy a new phone with less than 64 Gbytes these days, or an Android media player with less than 32 Gbytes.

Android VPNs generally work fine on the Fire Stick for most apps.

But Amazon has some other built-in means to determine the country your Fire Stick is in beyond the current IP address, so Amazon's native apps aren't fooled by a VPN. For example FreeVee won't work in Canada on the Fire Stick even with a U.S. VPN.

Did you select a pick up location before applying the coupon code?

It's only for first time pick up orders. If you've picked up an order before, it won't work.

Yeah I’ve never done a pick up order before, maybe I’m not doing it correctly on my mobile. Will try on desktop and report back

Adding more storage would be super cheap for them, but the point of streaming is to eliminate the need for local media storage so it's not an expense they're going to take on for the majority of users who don't use all the space.

I love my 4k stick but it is now - all of a sudden - semi-dead (in case anyone has any ideas for me): it turns on but but there is no Home screen...just black. So I can't navigate anywhere via the screen. The voice command does work and if I say, Open Netflix (etc.), it opens. But it won't open Settings in order to manage apps, etc. I've tried various things (off of Youtube, etc.) but nothing works. Other buttons don't work. I have not yet reverted to the "as new" setup (and don't know how) and don't know if that will help.
