[Amazon Canada] Fire TV Stick Basic Edition (1080p) $39.99

Not a bad price for the Basic Edition and $30 less than the 4k/Alexa model. Its been this price for a few days now so likely go back to $50 soon at which point just get the 4K model. Image

Just get the 4K when it’s on sale. Way better. Unless your a homeless person, don’t waste your $ on this one.

Even if it's going on a 1080p tv? Just curious..

When on sale it's just $10~$15 more, hardware is more capable and the included Alexa remote is selling separately for $40.

I have the 4K version on both my 4K TV and my other 1080p TVs. Works great, and can play many codecs like h.265/hevc natively.

To add to the 4K recommendations above, it also has a better remote.

I have a regular version and a 4K, I would pay $15 more for the 4K (when in sale).

Just got the 4K version and while I’m not crazy about the UI for the Plex app (I like the new unified version on roku/PS4), it all runs well so far.

I purchased this stick on prime day for $30, and it's not all THAT bad. If $40 is your limit or you want something now, it would be fine for a 1080p setup. UI is a little laggy, however never any issues with playback using Netflix, Plex or Bell apps. This stick essentially replaced a 2nd TV receiver, and the only sacrifice I've encountered was you can't play all recordered shows through the the app.

I've also been able to run some emulation on it. I wouldn't use it in my main setup but good for bedroom/kids/garage.

Just my experience, ymmv

The basic edition is snappy, and is a great product. Not everyone needs or uses the included remote. I wouldn't hesitate on the basic version if you are adding it to a 1080p tv.

I sideloaded VLC player on my Firestick and it plays 1080p HEVC ok. Sideloading lets you choose the latest version of VLC player, rather than the version which happens to be in the app store.
