[Amazon.ca] GlocalMe G4 Pro 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot - $186.99 ($33.00 / 15% off)

Their international data plans are pretty reasonable. Instead of getting a sim in every country you visit you can use this.

You can also use a local sim card (fido's 4GB for $5) and have this hotspot a wifi, instead of using the tablet to hotspot.

This seems ridiculously expensive in the age of KnowRoaming and all the others.

Just like a cell phone hotspot feature, it's a plan + device to share LTE data over Wi-Fi.

I have one and used it for a trip to Europe, Mexico a couple of times, and lent it to someone for their China tour.

For the most part, it's a wifi hotspot.

Not taking the free data that usually comes when you buy a new one, you either need to purchase a data plan for the countries you're visiting (https://m.glocalme.com/US/data_package) or use one of the two sim card slots built-in. (I've never used that functionality but it should function like setting up a hotspot on your phone)

Some plans are a block of data for a duration for a certain country or group of countries, some are unlimited daily passes (throttled after a certain amount), some are recurring monthly packages. Generally if you buy for one country, the data only works in that one country, no roaming unless you buy a global, North America, Asia, etc. . . package.

It also doubles as a battery.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys, looking to get some advice on this matter. I'm planning a three week car road trip where I need high speed internet for work.

Is there any other alternative to this? I was planning on using just my phone to hot spot but I only have about 10GBs.

Are there any other alternatives to this or a cheaper data plan that will work in the remote parts of Canada.

From the reviews on Amazon, it seem that this glocalme device has better reception, so now I'm questioning my approach to just hotspot with my phone.

Any advice is appreciated

Instead of using this, you should instead sign up for Google Fi. Free almost-worldwide roaming.
Cards: Aeroplan Reserve • Cobalt • US Gold • Bonvoy
Airlines: Aeroplan SE • AF/KLM Gold
Phone: AT&T • Google Fi • SIMBA • Free.fr

Crazy expensive. 70$ USD per month for the roaming plan. They say unlimited but it’s throttled after 22GB.

LOL this is literally a phone but expensive.

You can achieve the same thing by purchasing a really low end Android, enabling tether, and stuffing in a SIM.

I used to carry around a Moto E 2nd back in the day and tether off that. Since I never used any screen time I'd get like 16 hours out of it.
The phone was $50 and as low as $10 from AT&T in the US.

If wherever you're traveling has cheap data (ie basically anywhere but Canada) you can buy a local SIM. If you want to be "prepared" you can buy one of those worldwide data SIMs like Piranha.

Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

I would recommend it for international travel for sure. It's nice being able to just turn it on as soon as you land, instead of finding a sim seller and going through that process.

Just check the data prices to make sure you're ok with them. No point if you don't like their pricing for data. In addition, some countries aren't covered like much of Africa and Cuba. Some countries are weird and not in packages you would expect and expensive like Malta.

Looking at KnowRoaming pricing, that might make more sense if your phone is esim compatible and you like their pricing. (my OnePlus 7t isn't and I've my G4 Pro for almost 2.5 years)

Forgot to mention I've used it a bunch of times going to the US.

Never bothered to use it domestically but maybe might if I had relatives visiting and lend it to them.

A low end android might not have the necessary bands required in various parts of the world. You COULD buy a sim in each country you visit. This is meant to curtail that hassle. Also with sim cards, you could be on the hook for roaming charges. The GlocalMe has no roaming charges.

I can't find band information with a few seconds of googling for this device.
I'd be curious to see if it supported the "good" (read: fast) bands everywhere in the world.
I've taken my Moto E 2nd to a few countries and have been able to get 4G but I definitely haven't travelled the world.
If you absolutely need fast internet, you could for the same price as this pick up a few phones with the necessary bands.

I'm definitely not disputing the convenience of setting up a SIM before you go.
This is why I suggested a company like Piranha which does the global roaming thing too.
I'm only shitting on the device, not the rate plan.

Depends on the company. Domestic SIM? 100%.
But there's a whole lot of international SIM providers that do exactly the same thing as this.
