High quality product but may need some tweaks out of the box to function properly.
First, if the bolt is not firmly attached to the distributor side, the distributor will not lock in place. A wrench with some tape to protect the threads will fix that.
Second, the bolt may be too short to adjust either side with enough extension for certain group heads. By inserting a spacer between the bolt and distributor before tightening with the aforementioned wrench and tape, the bolt can be lengthened to allow for more extension of the distributor.
Third, if more extension is required for the tamper, the textured ring can simply be removed altogether but many people are discovering tamping is no longer required after distribution.

Pic 1. Extended bolt
Pic 2. Greater distributor depth
Pic 3. Greater tamper depth

I was tempted to return this item but am glad I didn’t since it works perfectly now, was fun to play with and is better value than pricier options.

Should be noted. While you can adjust the height of the distributor side, there is no way to lock it in, so it will spin and possibly move from the adjusted height. You could use loctite to prevent that, but then it's no longer adjustable. Aside from that, it seems nicely built and heavy. It's doesn't reach to the edges of my IMS competition basket, so that's annoying, but some baskets like the IMS competition and VST are 58.5mm.

I have an 870XL
I use the default stuff from the box: built-in grinder, non pressurized basket, standard portofilter, tamp, and "razor"

Generally speaking I'm happy with my coffee, but like everything there's always room for improvement

Is there a benefit to this on its own or is this a piece of the pie along with other upgrades (bottomless filter, separate grinder, etc)?

It would probably be worthy as just a tamper. At the very least, you would always tamp level and at a consistent depth. I suspect there is more leeway since you're using a pressurized portafilter.

Received mine on Saturday. Amazing tool! Heavy and well built. I used the following video to adjust it for my Breville Express. I'm always in the espresso range now :)

Breville Barista Express has a 54mm portafilter, so 53mm will work.

I can confirm that once you adjust the distributor to your desired height you can lock it in.

One argument is that if you adjust the distributor height with the razor, once leveled you don't need tamping.
Also I read tamping pressure is not as crucial as having a well distributed and leveled surface. Link

Had one of these since January , used daily with no issues.
Have the 53mm version for the 54mm Breville Bambino.
Like the simplicity of one tool to distribute and tamp.

I bought one of these when I first got my espresso machine, and didn't have much success. Now that I have a quality grinder, and vst basket in a bottomless portafilter, I think I will try it again.

I have a breville dual boiler 920xl and a Eureka mignon specialita. If I remember, I'll report back my results.

I own this. You can lock in the tamper side, but cannot lock in the distributor side. I ended up using loctite on the distributor threads.

According to what i've read, the distributor is not helpful at all. It will only distribute the top layer of the puck. It seems a lot of the home baristas prefer using a WDT tool to break up any clumping and level tamping.

Actually, if you were going to buy one tool to start with. I would buy a decent scale. This way you can keep Dose and Volume constant. I think time is the least important variable.

Noobie here. I looked up a few scales, and the general opinion seems to be to just get any cheapie scale. Most of these coffee blog sites suggest amazon.com listings and the amazon.ca price is 2-3x the price.
Which scale do you use? Does this one fit the bill? https://www.amazon.ca/Ataller-Function- ... B07L2MJV12

I use this scale. If it breaks or gets too wet then at least it’s cheap.

I also have a dual boiler and specialita. I tried making a homemade wdt tool with a cork and inoculation loops but it’s flimsy and doesn’t work that well. I rarely get clumps anyways. Tamping is the bigger problem so I bought the leveller.

This is incorrect as you just need to play around with the screw on the inside and you'll be able to get it to lock.

I know that this was an issue when I originally bought this (before this was posted on RFD) and I was able to get it to lock to my preference after playing around with it for a few minutes. I use it every morning whenever I'm making my morning espressos and it works and feels good.

I use this dosing funnel to get all the grinds into the basket and then use a tool to do the WDT way of distributing the grinds by breaking up any of the big clumps. I use this distribution tool afterwards and then tamp it down and I'm golden.

Thanks probably good. As long as it's .1g accurate and has a timer, should do the job. The other consideration is height, will the scale and cup fit under the portafilter on your machine? The other thing would be water resistance. I bought a version this scale a few months ago for $20, it seemed to be popular on reddit and other espresso forums.

Espresso Scale

I like the scale, except, if you shot is messy or spills onto the buttons, it could affect the functionality of your scale. With micro spatters and overflows, the buttons on my scale are now "crispy/sticky" and my LCD is discolored. It still works, it's just not very enjoyable to use. Since the gumminess of my buttons are probably going to eventually affect the usability of my scale, I just ordered a Timemore Black Mirror off Ali for $53. Twice the price, but it's touchscreen, so no buttons to gum up. It's also rechargeable and water resistant. It seems to be a good compromise between cheap ($20) and expensive ($200+).

I stand by my statement the Distributor will not lock.

This can be mitigated by using a wrench to ensure the bolt going into the leveler is firmly locked so it can't move, which both of my units were not. I suppose you could have received a unit that had the leveler and stud bolt firmly attached. Looking at the Q&A, I wasn't the only person who wasn't able to lock in the leveler in it's unmodded state.

Did you guys also experience coffee ground stuck on the edge on both sides? Even when set distribution side to the minimum heigh, still there is groove and coffee residue would be stuck inside
1. Buy cheap, buy twice
2. Don’t buy because it’s cheap. Buy it when needed or it brings convenience/happiness/better quality in life
3. Buy now think (regret/return) later
