I didn't look for the data. IMO i3 10100 should be better than this.

Granted it's 2 generations behind what's available now but at the time it was probably the best value proposition of that generation of Intel CPUs. I have one and performance is excellent. I also have systems with 9th and 10th gen processors which I really didn't need but I blame that on RFD.

it would be a good deal if motherboards didnt cost almost as much as the cpu.
yes there are cheaper motherboards but i am talking about the ones with 6 sata slots and posibility of overclocking

i am talking about a upgrade path for later and not overclocking the 8400.
as in getting something like the i9 9900k later on when you have money or when it goes on sale.

socket 1151 ... we're currently on socket 1200 ... possible upgrade option for those with lesser socket 1151 cpu?

An i7-9700K is nearly as good as a i9-9900K for real world use, and actually a better choice for gaming. Plus it's cheaper.

The 9900k is a pricey upgrade. Probably not something you'd need unless you're doing CPU-heavy stuff like processing 4K videos. On top of the CPU cost, a decent cooling setup will add at least $100 to the price.
