Agreed, positioning of front height > upfiring.
That said, these speakers can be setup for either position.

Yes, this can used as FH but any bookshelf speaker will do which is less than half of the price of this one.

Great price, thanks OP. These were my movie theatre's missing pieces. I'll start them out as upward firing (by placing them on front right/left) and go from there. Where should I position them should I decide to mount them on the ceiling?

These are wall mount only if not sitting on top of speakers. The main positions should be at front height, rear height or at the sides. Your room probably dictates where you can best mount them.

Note that upfiring only works if you have flat ceilings (no popcorn).

I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out speakers to use for Atmos duty and I've come to the conclusion that these "atmos" speakers are just hype. Everyone i've spoken to says the placing these on top of your mains is nonsense and won't compare to proper height mounted speakers. Also, standard bookshelf speakers will far surpass the performance of these atmos speakers for less money.

In addition, you can even rely on small satellites for Atmos duty since it's not that intensive of a role (vs. L/R/C or even regular HT surrounds). You can pick up Klipsch R-41s or R-51s on sale right now for way less than these atmos speakers and they'll blow the atmos ones out of the water. I just grabbed some R-41s for my atmos setup.

I just got a pair for $150 in FB marketplace. I can't resist, it will replace my bookshelf and still it will be front height. I also got RF-82 II which will replace my RF-82 which I will going to sell.

These speakers aren't hype for solid Atmos sound. Have them on my fronts and they are rock solid. I have a smooth drywall ceiling and they work great! It is critical you have a smooth flat ceiling and not a dropped ceiling for amazing high quality sound. These take it up a notch for 7.1 or 9.1 or.2.

Good price for reference premiere (RP) line speakers.
Make sure your receiver supports Dolby Atmos.
