[Amazon.ca] Lenovo Flex 5 14" 2-in-1 Laptop, 14.0" FHD Touch Display, Ryzen 5 4500U , 16GB DDR4 256GB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe $834

I've seen a lot of hype around new Ryzen CPU which push the budget category to the next level. Very unusual combo of the powerful and energy efficient CPU ( 2.30 GHz, up to 4.00 GHz Max Boost, 6 Cores, 6 Threads, 8 MB Cache) and 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM plus M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe SSD.

Keep it up, Lenovo.

Good deal, wait for the BTS price drop.

I've read there is a slot for the regular SSD.

I have both this laptop and the Ideapad 3 17" on order lol.

The legitimate concern with the 17" is the 1600x900 resolution which I will have to test out thoroughly. Got a good deal on that one though, $675 + 11% Rakuten, which brings the price of that to a little over $600 + taxes! The display is really the make it or break it factor there. I tried searching and even called Laptopscreens.com but they don't have or know of a FHD screen replacement, which I would definitely be doing. I'm sure it would work because the Vega 8 GPU would likely be able to handle it but unfortunately their website does not list a compatible FHD replacement screen and the sales guy didn't want to go out on a limb to recommend one either. So $100 for FHD screen and $75 to have it replaced by a local laptop repair shop, I would do it but don't know of anyone that has successfully done it, not even on Reddit.

Anyhow, my plan is to install the same game on both machines, "Nascar Heat 4", the game which stressed out and heated up the $1300 TUF 15", which I returned to Best Buy. Going to see which one stands up to test in terms of thermals. Obviously going to compare the 2 screens side by side to see which one is more usable for me. I don't really care about the touchscreen or the flip feature of the Flex.

Use case will be an important factor as well. If I want a more capable workhorse workstation connected to a docking station the the Flex 14" would be the way to go. If I wanted something really cheap for casual gaming on the laptop itself, the the Ideapad may be better (assuming the resolution is adequate of course lol). Will do a review next week :)

Some facts for folks.

Internals
- Upgradeable SODIMM Slot (3200Mhz Support)
- Upgradeable NVMe SSD Slot (Standard Sizes)
- Upgradeable WiFi Slot

My standard maneuver with any RFDGuy laptop is to gut the above three and replace them with mensch-level hardware.

Upgrades
- 16GB or 32GB 3200Mhz SODIMM [Netting 24GB or 40GB Total RAM, respectively]
- 1TB or 2TB NVMe PCIe 3 SSD
- Intel AX200NGW WiFi 6 card

A subtle, understated build. Should run Solitaire well.

Edit: This machine is not RAM upgradeable, not a deal killer for most, with 16GB Onboard.

Good plan, my only reservation is that I'm not too keen on a 14" display for home use. It'd be ideal for coffee shops or connecting to a docking station. Does this laptop have USB-C charging?

To your question, maybe not. They excluded USB C charging in the 2019 laptop, they might've done it again.

Nice, this is a solid laptop for the price. I'm excited to see what sale prices will look like given these new gen laptops are already at such reasonable prices.

I jumped on the 3500U, 12GB version for $599 in November. Just sent it off for a return to Amazon on Friday. Would no longer post. We were happy with it while it worked, screen could be better, but it was snappy and as a family we really liked the 2-in1 form factor. My son is a budding 11yr old graphic artist, so was disappointed when it died.

I think I’m a rare exception, not hearing may bad stories on these. Reason I was able to return it so late after buying, was Lenovo giving me a bit of runaround on the warranty repair. The PC shipped from amazon out of the US, so that where the serial number is registers as being bought. Contacted Amazon, and the took back for a full refund no questions. Would have happily taken a replacement, but they don’t have in stock.

This is a nice spec machine, but needs to cool down so it becomes hot, with a lower price and some coupon goodies.
