Tamron or the Canon 24-70 F2.8 II? Ignoring the fact that canon costs twice as much I am debating. Tamron VC is attracting me but I have never owned a tamron. Time to do some research.

Which was nearly 4 years ago and will probably not get as low as $799 anytime soon

If your wanting to try out the lens, I'd purchase from Amazon as they're much better on returns than best buy in my opinion. The lens is very sharp and the VC works well. View the sample shots on Amazon.com reviews for this lens. Excellent all around lens and the F2.8 makes it that much better

Having had this lens I can tell you it's super sharp, fast focus and a bargain compared to Canon's latest. It probably sits in the middle between Canon Mark I and II. I sold my Canon 24-105 f/4 Mark 1 for this Tamron.

You would only want Canon's 24-70 f/2.8 II if you're a professional, slightly faster, reliable focus, and you want to stay in the realm of native glass.

I would have loved to keep it, but I shoot primes in that range.

I shoot weddings with this all day long, it's also a tank, dropped a padded bag with a backup canon 6d attached. Body was a write off lens is still great. Only quibble is that the lens hood mount is brutal, very easy to lose if not careful.

Nice lens, too much $$ for me though, will stick with my entry level primes.

More interested in a deal on the 70-200 f2.8 VC.

got this len the first day, a bit disappointed how come the focus is not even on par with the 40mm 2.8 on my 5D, a $1000 len vs a $120 len....not sure all of you guys? good price though, even cheaper than what is selling in the states

Speed, accuracy, both?
Does your copy need calibration?

i don't recall it being an issue

speed appears fine, but accuracy appears lacking, shot in the playground yesterday, i have very low ratio of usable picture. vignette is obvious in low light, even through my view finder. this is my second tamron, have another 90mm macro len which did a great job for me. not sure if this is just my own experience

Are you using back button focus, holding the button down in AI Servo?

I admit I don't use a standard zoom for tracking so I might not be aware of the issue. When I had the lens, doing portraits, it was incredibly sharp, bokeh was nice.

Had this lens for a year and a half and it's amazing with my A7S2. I use it only for video so don't use autofocus, but the image quality (and image stabillizer) are excellent and highly recommended.

For those who bought Tamron lenses from Amazon.ca, please make sure you contact Amplis (Company who deal Tamron Canada warranty) to double confirm your copy of Tamron lens are legit copy for 6 years Canadian warranty, not grey market lens. I had some bad experience when i purchased mine (Shipped/Sold by Amazon.ca) Tamron 15-30 Di VC USD from Amazon.ca last year.

I always though that Tamron and Sigma are cheaper and better than Nikon and Canon but the chance of getting a bad copy is higher.

FYI there's a newer version of this lens, the G2... don't think it's a big difference optically, but it does have better VC (IS) and lens coatings.
