If you’re in the know with respect to tactical gear you’d know that Olights are ridiculed on sight, and their reputation is forever tarnished due to a death that occurred while a man was fixing his car with his Olight in his mouth.

Wait, what? Did it explode and take his face off or something?

BRIEF / October 29, 2019
CHICAGO — The Estate of the late Caleb Michael Joyner sued Olight Technology, Mica Electronics, both of China, for fraud and negligence, claiming Nuon brand lithium batteries in an Olight flashlight exploded while Joyner held it in his mouth fixing his car, killing him, in federal court.

If you don't need it to be "tactical", take a look at Sofirn, Wurkkos, Skillhunt.

Why would you blame the flashlight manufacturer if a cheap third party brand of battery exploded?

Lithium batteries are no joke. I cringe at people buying the cheapest no-name cells. I always stick to at least Samsung, Sony cells. When I chose an e-scooter, I bought one with Sony cells.

I have no problem with Olight but I think there are so many options for great lights these days. What I don't like for their lights is that they don't have options for high CRI or warm tints. And also no low lumen mode (1 lumen or thereabouts).

Wurkkos FC11 is probably the best general purpose light for most people who want a single light for around the house

Define best? :) This is only 2k lumens, i don't see why it would be over $100 unless you really need "tactical" version whatever it means. Sofirn Q8pro can be had for 50-60 bucks on sale and that one is 10k+ lumens.

To me this would be the best tho, i'm really tempted to get one just as a toy (or weapon lol), true 100k lumens (but only for 2mins, then it scales down due to heat): imalent ms18

Lolwut. Do you have special information about that case that shows the man replaced original batteries with cheap alternatives?

If not, as a consumer why should I hunt for the blame when Olight picked cheap batteries for their product themselves and selling it to consumers. You see why your logic makes no sense? Does olight sell these without batteries and ask customers to provide their own? If not, they are responsible for this mishap.

Do I go ask Toyota who their airbag manufacturer is to find who to sue for killing my family member instead of taking Toyota to court? lol

Don't they use their own branded batteries? I don't own their lights so I don't know for sure.

all the article says is that the NUON brand battery exploded in his OLIGHT flashlight.

the question is: did the guy use the original battery or not? I bought Olights over the years and they always came with a Olight battery.

One of the things I've learned is that Olight is frowned upon mostly because they use proprietary batteries, have emitters on the cool side of the spectrum (low CRI, but "flashy") and are kind of expensive for what they are. Let's not even get into their multiple revisions of magnetic charging that are not interchangeable. Recently showed a friend my Sofirn SC31Pro and forgot the model, but her similar Olight was 3-4x the cost/performance.

That being said, they're much brighter than standard consumer lights, and have an insanely good reach due to their marketing campaign.

I'd plot it as a one notch above regular consumer level lights, but far below what you CAN buy in terms of the enthusiast market.

One thing I've learned in the past whilst doing research on it, is that there is no one-size fits all. Different sizes of hosts, different emitters, different batteries etc.

I found for me, pocket carry (w/ clip), magnetic tail + ability to tail stand, good runtime, and since I use 18650s for other things, the Sofirn SC31Pro with the 5000k SST-40 is great for me. ~$38 without any discounts (or magnetic tail cap) on Aliexpress. (plus usually anything over $20 gets aliexpress standard, which is air, and arrives in 2ish weeks in my experience). Bonus is onboard charging in a pinch. You could also get it directly from Sofirn's website for similar or less w/ discounts.

Only problem is, now I want more Face With Tears Of Joy

My old D cell powered maglite I used to keep in my car for *ahem* road-side repair finally made it's way out of the car in 2011. They were great for their time. Stupid long run time too. I looked it up.... 45 whole lumens :D

Their LED offerings leave something to be desired, but if for some reason I needed incandescent, I'd be all over them again.

I need a compact trigger activated flashlight that contains the power of the sun concentrated into a tight beam, to carry in my car's cup holder and shoot into the cabin of cars driving at night with their high beams ON.. any recommendation?
