[Amazon.ca] Plugable 7-in-1 USB-C Hub, 87W PD passthrough, 4K60, GB ethernet $45 with coupon

After getting the Dell Inspiron deal, I've searched high and low for a reasonably priced USB-C hub with 4k output at 60hz and more than 60W PD passthrough - usually you only get one or the other unless you spend close to $100.

I settled on the Anker 8-in-1 for $60 on boxing day, but now Plugable has a 7-in-1 for $45 (after $5 coupon) on Amazon.

*60hz 4k requires laptop with DP1.4 support, otherwise it will output 4k at 30hz

Not bad. Why don't they come with USB-C ports? Once you plug in the power, you have no USB-C out.

USB devices standards require a "Master" and "slave" device for each media. Think about a USB A - USB A cable. If you plug that cable into two usb ports on your motherboard, you could cause a fire and fry the board. This is likely why you don't see many male-to-male cables or hubs that share the same port type. I learned this while looking for a OTG cable for my Pi last week! :)

Is an option if you want USB-C power from the wall, USB-C to the laptop, supporting charging, and DP/Thunderbolt out, to a dock that has ethernet, dual USB-A and dual DP 4K support output. I don't do 4K output, but I go from this to an eVGA triple DP hub, to drive 3x 1080P monitors. Charges the laptop, single cable dock, and drives 3 displays (plus internal if I want).

If I had 4K monitors, I'd happily test the use case. Works on an HP Spectre X360 15 8th gen, if anyone cares. The 60w vs 87w might be important depending on use case.

I’m using this port replicator and it’s been great:
Anker USB C Hub for MacBook,... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0823H9K3R?ref ... b_ap_share
I prefer the dongle (but I wish the cable was longer like a proper docking station), I only need 1 cable plugged into my laptop and all the other cables/dongles can be hidden from view.

There must be something I'm not understanding.

What has the laptop's own DP1.4 support got to do with the hub's HDMI 4k60 out capability over USB-C?

According to the description

4K HDMI DISPLAY - The 4K USB-C to HDMI adapter can push your creativity to the next screen with resolutions up to 4K 30Hz.

I dont think 4K 60Hz and USB3 works together, simply there are not enough bandwidth for it, even it uses DP1.4 Alt mode

Since there is only one HDMI port, you can only connect 1 monitor, right?

In this case you have no USB-C out even without the power adapter plugged in, as per the note in the picture (*USB-C port for charging only).
