Just got one of these and started to learn how to use it last year..... amazing results with little skill required, and you can't really mess up your paint.

Great buy!

Can someone let me know what I would use if I had a much smaller polishing project? I’d like to polish small brass half round rods. I get them from an industrial supplier, so they have a lot of small scratches, and I’d like to get them looking pretty perfect.

I could use a few different grits of sandpaper and do it manually, but hoping to make it easier.

Pair this up with the Lake Country 6” backing plate and the quick change Velcro pads from eShine.ca

I use the Poorboys SSR1,2,3 and the wax and glaze.

Good tool for a good price. Novice can get this and spend 8 hours on a 3-stage polish and get excellent results.

FYI this RO polisher is more for cars, for polishing brass rods you may want to look at the die grinder thread..

This looks like a great tool for an OK price. At least it's a recognized high quality name and not something "off brand".

I just bought a similar polisher from CTC in their MAXIMUM line for $100. I couldn't justify anything more for a tool that I know I would use only occasionally.

Are you talking about this one?

That is not the same product as the Porter Cable. The one from CT is a rotary polisher, not an orbital polisher. A rotary polisher is fine if you're experienced, but it can easy burn through paint if not careful. Random orbital polishers like the PC 7424XP is much more weekend warrior friendly.

Well. You could, But it wouldn't do anything.
Yes, you can use it as a sander. Porter cable sells the same tool as a 7346xp as a sander / polisher. It comes with a sanding backer plate and the polishing pad.

I've used my old school non-xp 7424 as a sander without any issues.

Yup. I've used it for sanding various woodworking projects and they have come out great. Makes quick work for those larger pieces like a dinner table. You'll need a different backing plate for it.

If you plan on using it for sanding and detailing, I would suggest getting two and keep one dedicated to a specific task. Reason is if you use it for sanding it generates a lot of fine dust and you don't want the fine saw dust to find their way onto the clear coat of your vehicle.

Guessing you've never used a random orbital for woodworking? Missing out...makes quick work of getting the surface nice and smooth! Much safer than say a belt sander. Most of the hand or palm sanders you purchase are are a random orbital design. They're just in a more compact form.

I have had the Porter Cable for 7424XP for 12 years and I can say it has been an excellent tool for my cars.
I also have a 6 inch Makita 9207SPB orbital sander for the last 35 years and once I got the Porter Cable I really got out of using the larger one.
Partly because foam pads starting to be more economical, plus a lighter machine.
For tight areas I have a Griots professional 3 inch orbital, this also has been a very good unit also over the years.
To me the 7424XP is still a pretty decent buy.

Two backing plates should be enough, depending on how messy you are. For occasional sanding, it's OK to use the same machine. Just blow it off outside using compressed air.

Two polisher units. My sanders are full of dust even if I do blow it out. I used to have a detailing business and kept my detailing tools specific. Even now, without the business, I have one for sanding and one for detailing.

I am really particular about the finishes on vehicles so I minimize the risks where I can. I am not disagreeing with anyone on cleaning out the tool with compressed air or anything, this is just my preference.
