[Amazon.ca] Router/Receiver Cooling FANs. $19.99

My router and my Yamaha Receiver give off heat and heat kills electronics so I thought I'd look into getting something to cool them down a bit.

I found and bought these small fans (AC Infinity MULTIFAN S5) from Amazon. The small size here for $19.99 (if you click on other seller's on Amazon they're in the $40 range for the same thing) for two fans it's perfect for your Router to cool it off. They have a larger size as well that I ordered for my receiver but it looks like the price has jumped up to the $50+ range, I got the larger two pack set for $34. (waiting for it to arrive today)

I'm extremely happy with the small two pack for $19.99 for my router, placing one to the side a few inches away blowing towards the router and placing the other one directly behind about 10 inches away blowing towards the back of my router where the vent slots are located, works great, I don't feel any heat anymore.

It has three speed settings on the attached cable, the top setting makes a bit of noise the second strongest setting is plenty strong enough and you can't really hear it unless you are a foot away.

You'll need a spare USB plug attachment that you plug the fan cable into as it doesn't come with that. Or plug it right into a USB port on your router or receiver.

Highly recommend if you want to cool off your router or receiver. $19.99 is a very good deal for these quality fans.

(Update, looks like they are all gone at the $19.99 price for two small fans now a day later, the original manufacturer was selling them through Amazon for that price. If you are interested best to put it in your cart as a save for later item and keep your eye on it, hopefully sometime soon it will be available again at that price For you.) I see we had 10 yahoos who gave this post a thumbs down, clearly people who don't know what they're doing. :)

If you're desperate you can find the larger size as a single fan for $17.99 if you search for "AC Infinity MULTIFAN S3" (I put a link to it on page 2 of the comment section). Keep in mind they are slightly louder and not as quiet as the smaller size. For me and where I have them located, I'd keep the smaller ones on the middle speed setting and the larger one on the lowest speed setting if you don't want to hear them.

Take care.

I suggest waiting for the price to drop on the 120mm version, it dips below $30 on occasion. 120mm has nearly double the air flow, 102 CFM vs 52 CFM for the 80mm variant. I built some of these into my home theater cabinet and they turn on when the receiver does, they do a great job keeping everything cooler.

I just received the larger S7 two pack they sound a bit louder to me even on the lowest settings then the smaller fans. But yes for a receiver the larger ones would be very good, the smaller ones are perfect for a router.
How do you have it come on when your receiver does? Thanks.

I have an ac infinity blower for my rack. It does a good job blowing out the warm air and creates negative pressure pulling in fresh air at the bottom.

I plug it into the USB port on my receiver so it only turns on when the reciever does.

I was going to originally Jerry rig a temp sensor and setup an automation in home assistant to only kick in when it was above 25c but the USB receiver thing works just fine

Alternately ac infinity sells temp sensor contollers

I use these to cool down my reef aquarium. I have a full lid so the temps rise in summer due to the lighting. They work great and very quiet.

I was going to do the same thing but my router and receiver are on the main floor so I need it as quiet as possible. And I'm very impressed with the small set for $19.99 I haven't set up the larger set yet but listened to them in a quiet room for comparison purposes.

i really suggest you find a big heatsink instead. i have a bell 4k receiver at my parents that's ran hot AF since they got it. i put a little fan on it but it pissed my mom off. now instead i have a few CPU heatinks just sitting ontop of it. runs cool, dead silent.

find the hottest spot on the router and start there. if the heatsink is hot, its dissipating heat.

this thread made me aware this is a thing:

For me these small fans are perfect as it's out of view and I can't hear them and my router is cool to the touch. But thanks. Thumbs Up Sign

How do you mount it to your router?

I have a vertical router and I’ve tried acrylic tape, double sided mounting tape, Velcro. It’s al failed.

So I threaded zip ties through so it’s hanging off the zip ties but it’s angled a big and I think the blades are hitting the back of the router making more noise Pouting Face

Do you just sit the heatsink outside on top of the vent (like these fans) or do you actually open the case and try to mount it internally somewhere? I'm trying to picture how it'd be done.

Mine is vertical (standing up) too, I don't mount it on my router I mentioned what I do in my original post above, one sitting about 1 inch away beside it and one about 10 inches back from it.

If you buy these fans the blades won't touch even if you did try to mount it with elastics or something as they are in their own protective case.

I haven't tried this yet, but I would think that you would want to keep the vents clear for proper airflow. The external heatsink idea would probably work best in situations where you can feel heat on the exterior of the device.

If the heatsink is covering the vents, you might want to check whether the temperature inside the case has actually INCREASED, which is very likely in this case.

For heatsinks to work, they are placed directly on the heatsource with a thermal paste acting as the interface so you have 100% contact Heatsource <--> Heatsink and no air gaps. If there's an air gap, the heatsink is useless.
