[Amazon.ca] Royal Kludge RK84 USB-C/2.4GHz/Bluetooth 80% Per-Key RGB Mechanical Keyboard - $93.49

The RK Royal Kludge RK84 in white, one of my favorite mechanical keyboards, is on sale at Amazon.ca for $93.49 or 9% off. It's been hard to find this for less than $120 for quite a while so this is actually a better sale than it looks.

The 3 way wired or wireless RK Royal Kludge RK84 with a long lasting (200 Hrs) 3750 mAh battery is a just-right sized 80% mechanical keyboard that comes in white (or black, but black is currently not on sale). You can choose either Red, Blue or Brown switches depending on your preference (Red for a quieter and fast gaming, linear feel and Blue or Brown for a more tactile, click-y typing feel with that familiar mechanical "bump", Brown being quieter than Blue). This RK84 has per-key RGB, with 19 built in pre-sets or fully custom programmable (including macros, etc), and is very responsive when it is plugged in via USB-C as well as using wireless 2.4GHz with it's included dongle. You can also run this via Bluetooth on any compatible device (remembers up to 3), including Windows, Mac, Android, etc. The RK84 also has a built-in 2 port powered USB 2.0 hub and the frame can be removed as you wish for a more exposed RGB look.

This is an excellent keyboard in its own right but can also be a great project mod board as it has a hot-swappable PCB that allows you to replace with any 3 pin or 5 pin switches as you desire.

More from Amazon:

  • THREE MODES: Believe it or not, this is the first generation of RGB three-mode wireless keyboards on the market. Wireless mode with stable bluetooth 5.0, hassle-free 2.4Ghz dongle plus USB-C wired mode set no limits about your keyboard connection.
  • 84 Keys, Redefine TKL: The innovative 80% unique layout differs from traditional TKL keyboards, which cuts more clumsy space off while supporting the same functionality as practical arrow, multimedia and control keys.
  • Hot-swappable: Hot-swap PCB allows you to replace 3 pins/5 pins switches freely without soldering issue. Enjoy the fun of making your own unique keyboard.
  • Red switches features a quiet and linear typing experience. The soft, top-to-bottom feedback offers easier and smoother use than other tactile switches. Perfect for people who work in an open office and stay up gamers.
  • Brown switches with gentle and stable features, compromises both tactile and low noise, two supreme merits and offers you the most friendly and satisfying experience.
  • Blue switchs are a little bit clicky but authentic and original, which is the most distinctive mechanical switch. It will remind you with the first feeling about mechanical keyboard, incomparable click feedback and refreshing tactile feel will make you typing with BGM.
  • Hub Design & Big Mac - This keyboard is armed with 2 built-in USB pass-through ports and 1 Type-C Port, allowing to back up more facilities. Week-durable to 200 hours with nonstop using under backlight off status, fully charged requires only 6-7 hours.
  • DIY Software Supports: DIY keybinding shortcuts, adjust brilliant backlight modes, reassign various key functions.

With the aliexpress sale on right now, I would recommend people check out the bm65, bm68 or similar custom boards from kbrepublic. I got one along with switches and keycaps for about the same price 6 months ago. You could basically get a full custom board.

Bought it from aliexpress for $80, no tax (I think it's possible to get a price close to that since there's a site-wide sale on Aliexpress happening right now). Even at $93, this is a great deal. 2.4 GHz wireless mode seems to work perfectly, but I don't really see a use for it. Apparently they resolved the connectivity issues in the newer batches. Bluetooth works just as expected and I have it connected to my tablet and phone. I use the usb hub that's on the keyboard with my mouse's wireless dongle and Yubikeys. Overall, really good keyboard and well worth the price.

Edit: Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available at that price anymore. I bought mine a few months ago.

I’ve been typing on an rk87 for over a year now with reds and have been enjoying it. A little bit of a learning curve with linear keys but I’m good now.

One thing to note is that my KB was advertised as double shot PBT but they are infact just ABS as they’ve gotten shiny already. Oh and I wish the BT/wired switch was on the side and not the bottom.

Other than that, no complaints.

Any deals for gasket mounted keebs? I've been looking at the Keychron Q1 for a while, but it's a bit pricey. Epomaker had a slim gasket keeb on Kickstarter, but I missed the early bird.

So, what's the difference between these and the G910 that I'm typing on now? I bought a cheap $30 "mechanical" keyboard and mouse combo that's way better than the crappy HP slim keyboards that come with all our computers but is there a difference between reasonably priced keyboards? How fast are you hitting the keys where different switches matter?

Too bad this doesn’t qualify/participate in the site wide sale. The cheapest option adds up to $93, so AliExpress basically saves $5 in tax

Main differences between the G910 and the RK84:

- G910 is full size / RK84 is a 80% (size of kb is a personal preference)
- G910 is wired / RK84 is Bluetooth/2.4Ghz + Wired
- RK84 is Hotswap, allowing you to swap out your switches by popping them in and out instead of soldering

So what will usually influence the price of these prebuilds is:
- Material of the case, aluminum is more expensive vs plastic
- Quality of the keycaps
- Quality of the switches
- Hotswap or not
- RGB, etc

The RK84 is a good intro keyboard if you're wanting to getting into customizing / modding your own keyboard. Lots of tutorials on Youtube you can watch and learn from.

I'm on the market for one (if I managed to sell some of what I have); the only budget friendly one I found was the Next Time 75 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003633825589.html

But I'm not completely sold on that. I'm looking to get one and settle, so been aiming for Q1 Knob. Akko Mod 007 V2 looking decent tho, it's surely on par as Q1 on price, but lots of extra that adds up.

edit:
@Nikhilvoid is this the one you saw on kickstart?

also another one to consider along that NT75:

If purchasing from Ali, make sure to use the promo code PROMOPRO6M during checkout from the above store for another $6.40 off. After $6.05 delivery charge, your total should be $85.27. Delivery won't be for another 4-5 weeks with Ali, of course. Amazon.ca will deliver by tomorrow for a total of $98.16 ($12.89 more than Ali) and since the order would be fulfilled by Amazon, returns wouldn't be an issue. The savings might be worth it for some, not for others with the trade-offs.

I recently picked up a HyperX mechanical keyboard and somehow got sucked into the YouTube blackhole of keyboard nerds. It is frickin' crazy. Never seen so many YouTube creators with 300k+ subs who only talk about making their own keyboards. Run. Run as fast as you can.
