[Amazon.ca] Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD $99.9x

Haven't seen this posted. ATL according to the camel website.

It's the same everywhere, except Samsung Website and The Source. Staples doesn't seem to carry it. The 500GB version is also on sale for $69.99.

The benefit of this SSD is that it's old/proven and has abnormally high endurance.

Great drive.

Not nerfed, if anything, they subbed in a 980 Pro controller, for slightly better performance in some cases.

I installed recently the 2 Tb version of this in my Dell 9510 as second storage unit. Transferring files between the two spaces, I'm hitting (easily) 1.5 Gb/s transfer speed. Way, way enough speed for most people...

600TBW doesn't seem like that high endurance, I've seen number of other 1 & 2TB drives with 1,200-1600 TBW

I don't have a PS5, but the Amazon product description states "Not Intended for use with the Playstation 5 - refer to Samsung 980 Pro with Heatsink. AES Encryption AES 256-bit Encryption (Class 0)TCG/Opal IEEE1667 (Encrypted drive)"

It shouldn't be fast enough because it's Gen 3 and peaks around 3xxx MB/s read.

Well, if you link them, we can talk about them, but in general: SSD endurance has been going down over time as manufacturers learn to cut away more safety margin. For example, this old mid-range drive has the same warrantied endurance as the brand new high-end 990 Pro that costs 2x more. And the 500GB has half, which is still a very good 300 TBW compared to new low-end drives close to this price. Plus this drive has a record of reliability. I personally don't know of anything cheaper and better. Things get really sketchy at this price point. I trust Crucial/Micron, and I assume that a normal person will never know that they're using a new cheapo 110 TBW drive, but there's something to be said for buying a proven workhorse.

Samsung endurances are famously understated.

This drive will likely hit north of a petabyte, easy.

Just have to hope it either fails during the Amazon return period or stays good. Samsung will happily turn you away if it fails after return window closes.

This drive is Gen 3 and will not in PS5, PS5 requires Gen4 drive.

Fwiw 5-year limited warranty or 600 TBW.

Ah, you must have skipped over all the threads where people share their Samsung warranty concerns and the run around they have to go through. Have fun with that 5 year “warranty” that you have to go to the retailer to claim and then the retailer tells you to go to Samsung and vice versa. Better off buying a KC3000.

Looking at https://linustechtips.com/topic/1092033-ssd-tier-list/ for tier rankings on SSD's, the OP 970 EVO Plus is C tier.

KC3000 1TB rated for 800TBW and is an A tier same $100 @ newegg - https://www.newegg.ca/kingston-1024gb-k ... -_-Product
P5 Plus 1TB rated for 600TBW and B tier for $110 @ amazon - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B098WL46RS?tag ... e=ogi&th=1
MP600 PRO NH 1TB 700TBW and A tier is $115 @ newegg - https://www.newegg.ca/corsair-1tb-mp600 ... -_-Product

Sure these aren't greatly above the OP 970 for TBW - I guess I was looking at the 2TB versions with >1PBW. BUT these are also all rated as faster drives even if the Crucial and Corsair are $10/15 more.

Isn't that like saying the warranty on a car runs out at <100,000kms and most can hit >200,000km easy?
