The Seagate 14TB at $299.99 is also at (I believe) an all-time low. Not as cheap as the WD version but pretty decent price if you want an EXOS 7200 RPM drive and where you don't have to worry any compatibility issues.

Amazon still accepts opened hdds if they are too noisy or faulty... BB doesn't???

fyi
I had really difficult time disassembling this HDD without breaking some of pins, so make sure to test them thoroughly before shucking it

What capacities are not noisy? I'm building my own NAS & wondering if I should buy 4Tb, 6Tb or 8Tb drives. I prefer them to be fairly quiet.

if its just reading an existing file, its not noticeable... when you're writing to it at full speed, you might hear a few buzzing sounds, but its really not as bad as folks make it sound. Also depends on what case you're using I guess.

Buy good fans then. The HDD won't matter until it gets old and starts death clicks or similar. If you want whisper you'll need to go solid state. Still, the fans will be loudest
