I havn't heard anything less than $2k in speakers alone that gave me the "wow" factor ... doesn't justify the price in my opinion.
Elac Uni-fi UB5 and the Bower and Wilkins 685 s2's come to mind. Paired with a good amp and DAC, both really shine. Good value there, especially with the Elac's.

Regarding headphone amps and DACs, it's crazy to attest that they don't make a difference. Just go to your local audio store and try the range of amps and DACs there.

HD600s are awesome in my mind - I'm just waiting for them to be super cheap before I buy them. I have the HD650 and the HD595 (the older version of the HD598 - same drivers AFAIK). First, the HD595 and HD650 are pretty far apart in terms of sound quality, with the HD650s being much better. That's not to say the HD598s are bad! They are amazing, especially if you bought them during the holidays for $109. Are either the HD650s or HD600s worth 4x more than the HD598s? Depends on how much you value good music, but you're definitely in the 'diminishing returns' part of the figure if you got the steal of a deal on the HD598s.

I've listened to KEF's LS50s & R300s ... both blown away by a set of $3000 set of 5 1/4" harbeths. It wasn't even close, a complete landslide.

+1 on the AMP/DAC part, I find a lot of people who think there isn't a difference havnt actually ventured off to test other hardware.

Shoot, why did I have to come look at this thread at this time of the morning, this seems like a price error to me, they sell for 1000USD or 1000Euros everywhere. I also can't see it when I apply the amazon discount filters ... oh well, in for one, let's see how it turns out.

Back down to $400 again.

Amazon has the Denon AHD-7200's on for $700 as well ... everywhere else is $1200+

should be fine
RFD is not just about saving money, it's about the thrill of the hunt and not paying full price like Joe Shmoe did. This applies to everyday items as well as high end items that I don't really need.

I was skeptical about the price too but it's direct from amazon ... let me know how it works out. Used ones go for 900+

It is out of stock but can still be ordered with 1-2month delivery time. It gives you ample time to think about it and amazon won't charge your credit card until it ships. So buy now, think about it later.

indeed, heard a lot of good things about the sound - let's hope it's all true. If not, there's a good chance I can still turn it around without losing too much given the current new price.
I hope it doesn't take 2 months to ship like it's showing currently on Amazon. I'll report back here if it's clean. I was on the market for a good wireless set and almost went for the P7 wireless but found out it went on sale for over 25% off a couple of times at the end of last year, going to try this until that happens again :p

Cheers,

From what I've read they give most of the planars a run for their money and put most of the fostexs to shame until you get to the sexy red zone (th900).

yeah - I read about this one a few months ago but thought the price was a non starter. At over 40% though, it's at least worth a try. If it ends up being 85~90% of a TH900, I would call it a win.

On another note, maybe I should take some distance from this thread, if you keep popping deals like this, I'm going to get ruined in a hurry! lol.

Cheers,

Perfect timing, I was able to test the Denon's in Yodobashi. Ordered it afterwards on Amazon as it was selling for 99,000 yen at Yodobashi which is close to $1200 CAD

I own a few of these headphones in this range, currently on my desk; 6XX, M1060, X00 PH, 400i

Honestly they are all good, In my basic one or two words

6XX - a legendary sound, balanced. vocals are great
m1060 - new, planar, heavy, good bass for planars. instrumentals excel here
400i - light, similar to 6xx but in planar form. honestly don't use it much except with my modmic.
x00 PH - lovely sub bass, and v shape sound. electronic music is so good.

powered by a schiit jotunheim with a modi multibit dac.

as much as people want to compare, any of these would make most people very happy.

Some interesting feedback, if the 400is are anything similar to the HD-6XX I will avoid them like the plague ... way too bright in the higher frequencies and lacked lower end bass.

X00 Purple Hearts can be had for close to the price of the new Denons or a used set of TH900 :/
