[Amazon.ca] Silicon Power SSD - 128G = $26, 256G = $41, 512G = $65

Amazon has some inexpensive Silicon Power SSD's on sale - no DRAM, but low cost. Great for a boot drive on older computers still using mechanical drive.

As both Silicon Power and PNY are reducing prices, is this a sign that SSDs are going cheaper later this year?

I am running about a half dozen of these and they’re fine. I find no difference between these and the adata/Kingston dram-less drives.

Cheers,
The 128 has been that low on and off for awhile. Picked one up for my old dual boot system. Has worked well so far, but to be fair 26 bucks is about a 2-4 dollar savings off other entry level SSDs (team group, kingston, and crucial have all been at 28-30 in the last couple months)

SSDs AND Ram are both meant to trend a bit cheaper over the next 3-6 months.

These say they have DRAM, but do your own due diligence...
DRAM cache: 32MB SDR
I know the manufacturer states 32 MB DRAM but it's deceptive marketing.
It's not DRAM as it's understood when comparing a DRAM-less SSD to one that has for example 256 MB or 512 MB of external DRAM.

According to this sub-Reddit:

"It's 32MB of SRAM - this is local cache for the controller (that all controllers have) that contains the "hottest" mapping data only. I state this in a few of my posts...but it's not external DRAM cache. If you need more information about how that works, I can link one of my older posts explaining."

@Temporel nailed it.

The 32mb of DRAM is not DRAM, it's like a sippy cup for a line backer. For all intents and purposes, this is DRAMless. DRAMless isn't great as we know, but even drives like these are light years ahead of eMMC garbage.

I'm not going to recommend these drives when DRAMed drives are only a little more expensive, however I won't hate on potential buyers.

God speed, men.

Dumpster DRAMless SATA vs DRAMed NVMe

Quality controller and Robust NAND could also play a part.

SSDs have not become fantastically cheaper during Rona 2020.

Sorry, do you have two SSDs as bootable? Or both systems are on the same drive?

Thanks

Picked up a 128GB to use as a jail in freenas for my offsite backup. Cheapest SSD by a reputable brand I could find.

Any consensus on the best between this, the Patriot Burst, and the PNY that was posted yesterday? Or are they all essentially the same since they all have no DRAM? I read a few reviews saying the controller on the PNY sometimes has problems, but I'm not going to pretend to really understand, and for all I know the other two have the same controller.
