If your willing to do $240, i think that's how much the new elac speakers cost and i really like elac speakers.
Yeah I had a price alert on this one too and it came up today, it looks like it goes lower on occasion but I'll post it here if people want to spend a bit more on these ones: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01A5UB4JU?tag ... uage=en_CA

Can't substitute due diligence for "good value" hype. The cs5 are specifically praised for good value in the US because of hitting prices lower than 100 usd, not at the current price Amazon has it for here. Every review you find about this speaker are based on the US pricing, where it goes on sale for less than $130 usd now, even $50-80 usd for used warehouse deals. At this "all time low price" here though it's an overhyped deal for mediocre bookshelves that you need to power externally. Already you need to have an amp/AVR and at that point you are getting into an enthusiast hobby where value becomes more subjective. People throwing money for entry level in this space end up returning or burn $$$ by upgrading later. Finding a good sale on quality passive bookshelves are good value deals, not this entry level overpricing in Canada. Sorry if you bought into the hype.

You still haven't posted a better passive speaker available today at a better price that I've seen. I know you "audiophiles" show up in every speaker thread but I'm just trying to help the community out. As you can see in the links I provided above, the speakers are mentioned in many "best under $200" reviews, so I'm not sure why you keep saying that people only think of them as good under $100. They might be right for you, but perhaps they are for the right person on this forum.

CS5 got their praise in the beginning for being priced at sub-100 usd, now it's getting overhyped. Did you even watch the video you linked? Literally in the video you posted from cheap audio man, he even states at the end that he wouldn't buy them unless they were less than $130 usd and that they are instant buy at $80 usd or less. What do you not get that these are just not good value here compared to the US? And now you want recommendations for passive bookshelves at $200 cad price point? If you want to play the crappy entry level home audio game, go buy the micca rb42 on amazon. It has better bass extension than the cs5 making it already better value, no one can listen well past 20 kHz. It even goes on warehouse deals for much less than $200 cad. Otherwise best to stick with active bookshelves for most people where you don't sink thousands on home theatre setup, just plug n play.

Don't you want your subwoofer(s) producing the bass?

The Micca RB42 and the Neumi BS5 are good contenders as well at this price point but it comes down to personal preference.

This is just comparing with the cs5 in terms of what you get for the price range it's at. If you want better home audio, you would get a subwoofer or two, a dedicated center, maybe some floorstanding speakers, etc. At that point why are you settling for less?

If you know your speakers ... then you have no issues in comparing.

Sony SS-CS5 versus Polk XT15

Sony SS-CS5 versus Polk RTi-A1

Sony SS-CS5 versus Polk TSi100

Sony SS-CS5 versus Kanto YU

*** If straight 2 channel stereo .. no need to look at Klipsch ... if system consists of more than 2.1 then definite Klipsch as it is paired up with the other channels that make sound much better.
16'x11' Living Room 11' Cathedral Ceiling. Hisense 65Q8G. Denon AVR-S740H 7.2 setup. Jamo Classic 10 280W Towers - FR+FL; Polk S35 - Center; Klipsch R51M - RR+RL; Klipsch R14M - Dolby FHR+FHL; Polk HTS10 Subwoofer x2. Unlocked Android Boxes from Taiwan x2

Interesting, the Sonys seem to hold up pretty well in all of those comparisons even though the Polks & Kanto are sometimes substantially more money.

I would say Polk ES20 is a good candidate. They go to around $450 on sale. https://www.audiosciencereview.com/foru ... ker.33834/
They sound good by themselves for music, but maybe add a sub for movie use. For a TV system, you need an amp with optical input to drive them like a SMSL AD18

There are many other speakers that are cheaper and also good value, but I've heard these and I would be happy with these myself and not feel an immediate need to upgrade.

Just bought a new pair of Sonys on Kijjiji for $120 just for the fun of modding it as per the video above. Extra parts going to cost me around $300. Let's see if it will live out to the promise of beating the $1000 speakers. Face With Stuck-out Tongue And Tightly-closed Eyes
