[Amazon.ca] Tp Link wifi 6 mesh router - $189

Seems like a pretty good deal on wifi 6 mesh router for $190. I've had good luck with the m5 before but trying to find a way to justify to these.

Would they work along with the m5s?

yeah all Decos should work together (just to highlight, all DECO, not all TP-Link, ie those won't mesh with omada)

Can different Deco models work together?
https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2248/

All our Deco models can work together. Under some circumstances, we have more than one Deco models (Deco M5, Deco M9 Plus, etc.) in hand and want to use them together in one network topology.

Note: When building a Deco network with different models, some features will disappear if one of the Deco units doesn’t support them. For example, if Deco M5 supports Fast Roaming while Deco M3W does not, then the Fast Roaming feature will disappear if you add the M3W unit into the M5 network. But don’t worry, these features will be added in future firmware updates.

I considered to buy it before, but instead bought one $99 huawei router last week, to mesh with my existing openwrt routers.

This one is ax1800 so wifi is 1800m, the huawei router is 3000m so the ideal setup should be getting 2 huawei ones and mesh them for roughly the same price.

M9 should be superior in most aspects, major exception would be the lack of WiFi6.
If you're using with Wireless backhaul will be far better as it use a dedicated band for it, if you're using wired backhaul, I think it should be similar in bandwidth but I think the number of antennas on the M9 should make the signal fairly superior.

Hehe, sounds like if you have a crappy DHCP server on your network you will hit this problem.

I'd suggest fixing your DHCP server if you encounter this problem.

Been running Decos for years and have never seen this.

Define "crappy" and what would need to be fixed. Never have any issues except for when I reboot my router or I need to turn off the breaker that my router is connected to and the Deco boots up before my router.

Buggy or underpowered.

For example, I know of one providers modem that if you start running a torrent through it responses on the web gui become so slow as to be useless (they are slow to begin with). That one didn't have DHCP request issues (slowed down a bit, but nowhere near enough to reasonably trigger a 'no internet' piece of code).

Fix is usually replacing the DHCP server (i.e. setting modem to bridge mode and setting up your own router).

Also, I want to add, that what the article about the 'problem' with the Deco units DOESN'T mention is WHY that feature exists: when you plug in a unit like this and connect to it over wireless, you need an IP to be able to configure the AP. If the network the Deco is plugged in to doesn't have a DHCP server, what's the Deco to do? Sit there and not let you configure it? That's why it starts it's own DHCP server so that you can configure it (perhaps back to router mode if that's what you need to do).

How is this setup? Would this be sufficient for 2,000 sqft 3 storey home? Any reviews from people who actually have this?

My ISPs modem/router had the issue and I now have it in bridge mode with an OpenWRT router which also has the issue. I've had a few different stand-alone routers since getting my Decos and have always had the issue. I understand why the feature exists, but the feature is obviously broken. TP-Link has also recognized that it's an issue and stated that there will be a fix for it in the next firmware version (who knows when that will be released though). They also said last year that it would be fixed in firmware version 1.5.4, but that was never released and they're now saying it'll be fixed in version 1.6.

I’m buying this for my parents condo, do I care if it’s not triband? They use Chrome / Plex / YouTube. That’s it.
