This one (STM) has been updated with all-digital focus ring, so it's smoother for video but less tactile.

The STM is smoother yes, but it makes almost no noise- thats where it shines. Really good for video.

This lens really shines on full frame camera. Great for large group photos (sharp across the frame when stepped down).

It's constantly this price on Amazon.ca sold by 3rd party sellers so this isn't hot.

Make sure you get the version sold by Amazon themselves if you want a proper warranty. Other sellers may not be Canon authorized vendors. On the plus side, they also may not charge you HST.

This is a must have lens for Canon users.

I've used 10+ copies of the Canon 50 1.8.

The old version had huge sample variation and autofocus was really hit or miss. Many copies had soft AF. The new STM version is better built and has much more consistent quality control.

Pretty sure the old model didn't have a metal lens mount either. Had it at one point but sold it.

Anyway this really isn't that much of a deal but it's not like this lens has very much room for improvement on price.

20% off a lense isn't much of a deal?!?!?! Note, it's not black Friday or boxing day.

It's always (most of the time for the past year, at least) $130ish on Amazon.ca, new in box by third party sellers. Usually no tax too which makes it closer to $115 in actual price, in Ontario. Maybe you just didn't notice before. I never really see it go below $130 though.

Everybody who shoots Canon should own this lens. It's a easy resale on Kijiji too and you won't lose much money.

Not a hot deal though, you can get this price any day.

As was said it is not that hard to get this price or better. Besides, it sounds a lot more lucrative in terms of percentages than it does in dollars. If I had to pay full MSRP I really would not be kicking myself over the $30. In other words, there is nothing about this deal that anybody should feel fear of missing out about.

Anyone has the 1980s first Gen 50mm with distance window and metal mount? I got one that is newer than any used 50mm ii lol. These are great the focus motor they used to use is much more reliable than the ii. That's why they came up with the stm version. Picture quality i feel the I is better than ii. Close though. Stm supposed to be better than ii.

Not a fan of 50mm focal length. Good for apsc cameras more than full frame I think.
Original 50mm is good collector piece of can get for 100 and less for a mint one.

Depends on usage, 50mm focal length on FF is pretty good, probably 80% of my wedding shots (I have the f/1.2)

80mm on my SL2. Still considering grabbing one at some point though. Now if there was a good deal on a wide angle lens, I'd be all set (well, as far as lenses are concerned).

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is DSLR accessories.

I've been really happy with the new(ish) Canon 10-18 mm (https://www.amazon.ca/Canon-EF-S-10-18m ... way&sr=8-3), but while $330 is relatively inexpensive when compared to other similar lenses, it's not necessarily cheap. If you're interested in both a wide angle and possibly one of these STM 50's then you might want to consider picking up the "portrait and travel" kit when it goes on sale (currently $400 on Amazon). https://www.amazon.ca/Canon-Portrait-Tr ... 45J11G9499
