[Amazon.ca] Warm: Porter-Cable 7424XP Variable Speed Polisher $144.49

This unit goes on sale from time to time. Its regular selling price at places like eshine.ca is $199 but I've seen it more regularly at around $170. So it's a bargain by no means. Still, $15 is $15 and this is a very very good polisher.

  • Random-orbit, swirl-free sanding/polishing action
  • Electronic variable-speed dial from 2,500-6,800 OPM. Wheel Diameter is 6 inches
  • Features a proprietary counter balance for use with 6-inch sanding/polishing pad
  • Accepts 5/16 - 24 spindle thread accessories
  • Features a 2-position (left or right) removable side handle for greater comfort and control
A great Father's Day gift, by the way - and this from somebody who would have loved to have gotten something like this on Father's Day.

$25 savings, not $15, math was done right there by Amazon as well, lol

Solid unit, though I don't use it as much as I had hoped I would. Got this for $100 a few years ago, IIRC (unless it was a similar sounding/looking model).

Ah yes, $99 back in fall of 2017 porter-cable-7424xp-6-inch-variable-spe ... 9-2148401/
ATL was $91.20 in 2014.

Fair. I was comparing against a typical "best" price for this past year - this unit was routinely around $160 last year as opposed to Amazon's "regular" $170 this year (and even higher). Blame dynamic pricing. Home Depot lists theirs at $238, Canadian Tire's price is $249 so this sale price is fair if you want a top notch polisher.

I've had a 7424 for 17 years and its a good machine but I wouldn't buy it at this point. Find an extra $50 (I know that's a lot more) and get the Griots G9. A lot less vibration, way more power.

They are a sturdy of machine but there is better out there now.

Variable speed. Chances are high to cause damage with a grinder

This is not just a rotating polisher. It is a Random-orbit polisher. Less of a chance to burn your paint by accidently going overboard on some corner, a lot more forgiving that a rotary unit.
I've had mine for over 15 years now, and it still works like a charm. Yes there are "better" models out there now, but this unit is perfectly fine for the average user. Now if you do this for a living, then you will prefer something with less vibration. Keep in mind that this unit only comes with counter weight for a 6 inch backplate (back in the days when I bought it, it came with the 5" weights only, I picked up the 6" ones separately). Makes a bit of a difference for the vibration.

I bought this a few years ago for $120. I use it 4-5 times a year and it's worth every penny. I strongly recommend that you ditch the white pad that is provided with the buffer. The provided pad disintegrated as I was buffing my car and the metal backing plate almost cut into my paint. Luckily I pulled it away in time and avoided damage. A set of decent pads will start around $30-40 along with a backing plate for about $15-20.
