Does this imply it shouldn't be used for your OS? Just for games/apps that aren't running all the time?

Do you have a source for that? These reviews suggest otherwise.

Its sequential read speed is below Sony's recommended 5,500MBps, and the PS5 does not support HMB architecture. But we still recommend looking for a drive that meets Sony's spec and asserts compatibility.)"

OS (boot drive) is more reading than writing data with small files, not sustained use

This drive is not recommended since the PS5 does not support Host Memory Buffer (HMB)

from https://www.playstation.com/en-ca/suppo ... 2-ssd/#faq

Do PS5 consoles support Host Memory Buffer?
No. Some M.2 SSD devices may support Host Memory Buffer (HMB) but they may experience slower-than-expected performance because the PS5 console does not support HMB.

I assumed it would work especially if the SN750 SE worked with the ps5. Good to know. Thanks

Dram not as important on nvme ssds as they can leverage system ram.

But good to know didn't think a black drive would be dramless

WD_BLACK SN750 SE released last year was DRAMless, uses the Phison E19T controller

Does the laptop have PCIe 4.0? Is the laptop going to be used by content creators and editors that are editing larger projects off the SSD?

"Host Memory Buffer (HMB) architecture SSDs such as the DRAMless WD Black SN770 is by no means a perfect ideal basis of storage for prosumer and power-users. Smooth running of the SSD is not possible when the memory of the client machine is at a high % of usage. Additionally, you need to ensure that your host system supports HMB in order to ensure the drive is not going to immediately bottleneck. That is why the WD Black SN770 is fully supported on PC but PS5 storage upgrades with this SSD are not recommended, as SMB is not readily available in the close console system design. Another downfall of HMB SSDs in the eyes of power-users is that sustained/constant activity with this lack of onboard memory faces diminishing returns. So operations that are larger in scope of sustained over a longer period of time result in the memory-flushing that this smaller area on onboard memory needs to be too low in frequency for higher performance to be maintained. The result is that the high performance of these more enduring operations will slow down more and more as they continue. PC gamers will not notice in instances of gameplay when the loading of an AAA title is higher front-loaded, but content creators and editors that are editing larger projects off the SSD in video production software will notice this slowdown over time. This is not entirely true, using system ram can add latency and has an impact on performance, given not so much on newer workstations. The 4.0 bandwidth kinda evens out the drives lack of dram.
So in a way, your statement is correct, given it is a new system with pcie 4.0.

This is a decent drive and it would be good for most uses (especially in a 4.0 system).

This or the XPG S70 Blade for the same price? Using it as primary boot drive.

PCI 4.0? then yes... if not get the previous generation or samsung evo plus.

Better warranty and relilability on wd over adata, though the gap is narrowing.

Not built for sustained use is concerning.
any drive would do for storage, ssd is not going to be vastly superior, only when you are moving/copying/writing.

Should have been more clear

I download, to the SSD, then transfer to the NAS. Constantly moving, copying and writing to the drive. Endurance is important.
