Do not buy this model for the PS5.

PS5 compatible ones are 7000 MB/s read speed and should have a heatsink built-in already.
Otherwise you would have to find and attach your own heatsink on top of one that does not have a heatsink built in and hope it sufficiently cools the drive and does not overheat.

This samsung one with the heatsink built in is what I use in one of mine: $299.99. Was $250 on sale
https://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-980-PRO-H ... 0cnVl&th=1

I use the officially licensed one in my other PS5. It was on sale for $249.99 a month ago. Now $299.99
https://www.amazon.ca/WD_BLACK-SN850-Co ... r=8-6&th=1

I was using a bare NVME drive without a heatsink before but my PS5 would power off and crash whenever I played a game that was stored the NVME drive slot for more than 45 minutes.

Without a dedicated heat sink, the hard drive overheated, even with the Sabrent PS5 Heat Sink attachment. That is why I would not recommend using a drive without a heatsink already built in. I have not had a single crash using a drive with the heatsink built in already ever since.

Man, I really love it when performance, capacity, and ability goes up but the price keeps on coming down. This is exact kind of incentive we need to keep us on the upgrading treadmill. Can't wait for the day when we get 10's of TB for the same price like it has for hard drives. Right now, the capacity is starting to inch upwards for the same price as a 1 TB SSD several years ago.

The other weird thing I noticed is that there's a huge price gap between 500 GB and 1 TB drives for the longest time. Maybe because 500 GB isn't good enough anymore and people have largely moved on from it, resulting from an inventory glut of 500 GB drives. After 1 TB, there's another significant price jump to 2 TB. The price seems to exponentially grow for every doubling of capacity.
Why settle for full retail price when you can wait and get it at a lower price for better value (even better if there's a bundled freebies deal)? 😉

I used to be Samsung fanboy. But not anymore I am glad WD acquired SanDisk and entered the memory business. I got a wD black and love it. Save me also $100 over the Samsung branded ones.

I believe that PCIe express 5 will come out this year for ssds. They already released PCIe 5x controllers so we will soon be seeing 5x drives. Causing these 4x ones to go on sale reduced pricing. Can't wait for 15,000 transfer speeds in my computers. Orcoussnyou will be an heatsink and a desktop board for that but still fun. Good airflow in your case.

Samsung is super overrated and you pay mostly for the name. They have the brand recognition from being in the industry longer and making the majority of the SSD chips used by other manufacturers. Plus the endless amount of marketing and advertising helps quite a bit and that's where their pricing comes from to cover that additional cost. WD never did SSDs and quickly ramped up their SSD business by purchasing Sandisk after seeing the writing on the wall that HDDs will only be relegated to mass storage and backups in the near future -- the fastest HDD can't possibly match the slowest SSD due to the fact that you can't beat the laws of physics.

Furthermore, Samsung's SSD warranty policy in Canada is a quagmire (and legal loophole for Samsung) where the guarantee is in name only since it is next to impossible to get warranty service. Samsung Canada does not directly service SSD warranties. You have to go back to your place of purchase, which may not exist anymore -- after 1+ year and your Sammy SSD is suddenly dead as a door nail. Good luck on that, where your retailer will redirect you back to Samsung since they've washed their hands of it if you didn't buy their Performance Guarantee Plan (aka extended warranty). Yet, Samsung says they can't help and you must arrange repair service through where you bought your drive. See the craziness of the situation?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's designed that way so that Samsung does not have to legally honour their warranty by this very loophole. Smiling Face With Horns It's available, but the process is a non-starter and it's cheaper and less headache to buy a new one. Just like Lagostina's "6 year warranty" where you need to ship them your defective fry pan to claim warranty service instead of sending them a photo, but I digress.

Anyways, I would discourage anyone from buying a Samsung SSD unless the price is so good that it's worth a gamble. I will go with anyone else before I would consider a Samsung SSD -- unless Samsung changes their SSD warranty process in Canada, which is unlikely and you shouldn't hold your breath about that one.

Here's my rebuttal to your essay: Samsung's are top for a reason. It's not just marketing. They make everyone else's chips for a reason. R&D and innovation in this space usually happens with them first for a reason. I will continue to prioritize Samsung SSDs over other brands whenever I can, the same way I do with Western Digital and HDDs. Warranty hasn't been an issue and shouldn't be for 99% of people. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Staples, Memory Express, Canada Computers, Newegg.... they're not going anywhere any time soon.

Thank you for attending my TEDx talk.

ETA: Amazon covered shipping costs when I had to claim warranty. And you can just take it into the store with the other retailers.

Warranty service directly to Samsung would likely cost you shipping fees. This system seems much better IMO.

Which drive would be better solely for transferring GBs of files back and forth, constantly? The WD Blue or the WD Black NVMe?

For context, I have a Lexar NM610 Pro NVMe and it is horribly slow. Even trying to re-name files on that drive gives me the spinning loading effect. I'm not sure if it's a DRAM-lacking thing, or I got a funky drive.

Anybody have any insights?

Price dropped to $179. I still think it's worth getting a PS5 compatible one
