Ordered the CPU and 16GB ram kit. Will worry about the MB another day. Already have a good case, PSU, will upgrade the GPU at a later date.

I'm not a heavy gamer but this processor should last me a long time for everything else, the benchmarks are pretty impressive.

Good riddance Prime Day, my wallet has taken a beating the past 2 days.

The 2700x seems to have better performance than the threadripper but still seems kind of down compared to 3600. Anyone have an idea what a x58 system would go for? 24gb ram, 5670 at 4.3 and gigabyte board.
I have a similar system to yours. If I were you (assuming it meets your needs), I'd just use it till it dies. Futureproofing is so pointless, especially when that CPU is 9 year old already and works just fine.

I'm in a similar boat. Have a xeon x54 running at 4.3 but the mobo is ddr2 lol. Bought the 2700x and plan to pair it with a x570 pcie 4 motherboard once I find a good deal. This way zi can always just upgrade the CPU later and still have the newest tech. I want triple m2 and 2.5g lan. The 2700x falls a little behind the 3600 in games but maybe an overclock can bridge that gap. This way still have 8 overclocked cores for everything else.

Thread ripper has a high cost of entry. The boards are ridiculous. The 2700x will work with any a320 or b350/450 boards which can be had at 100$ or less.
