Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) [3GB] vs Samsung Tab A 10" (2019) [2GB]

Hi Gents,

I'm now looking at de-bloating Amazon Fire HD 10 vs a stock Samsung Tab A 10" (2019) [SM-T510]. It appears I have access to a Amazon Fire HD 10 for $160 CAD plus tax, brand new. Meanwhile I have access to a Samsung Tab A 10" (used) tablet for $120 CAD plus tax, the used tablet is in decent condition, including the glass screen.

The 2019 CPU in the Amazon Fire HD, the Mediatek MT8183, is slightly faster than the Samsung Exynos 7904 CPU.

It seems like it's worth the extra $40 plus tax for 50% more RAM and a faster CPU. Bear in mind, both CPUs aren't super fast.

The de-bloating and de-Amazon'ing homebrews for the Fire HD make this particularly attractive. Are there permanent limitations around the Fire HD that the Samsung doesn't have to worry about?

What are your thoughts?

What's the downside of the Amazon Fire HD 10? Is there some component that's unusually weak, or is it equal or better value once it's de-bloated and updated?

Hmm yeah looks like Amazon has the Fire HD 10 for $160...is that even a deal? I can't even remember prices now. It goes to $100 US on sale there, no? Surprisingly though, Canada finally has the blue colour! White has disappeared though, oddly, lol so it's still two colours v. four in US.

Anyway, that gives a rundown of the CPU portion, what about their GPU capabilities?

Well I'll be damned, the Amazon.ca price reset over the last few days.

The Samsung SM-T510 has the Mali G71 MP2.
The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) has the Mali G72 MP2.

We already know the Amazon has the better GPU, but here's by how much.

The tally of benchmarks claims a 2% to 4% performance advantage, depending on game it's much larger or nil difference.

LOL so basically dead even in that dept. Overall it still looks like the Amazon one is better plus I believe the Fire tablets are very durable/break resistant. It looks like they have a Plus version (in US) now--has 4GB RAM and wireless charging...hmmm maybe better to wait for that one?

I don't need a super tablet, just something for a work deployment. The 4GB option is nice, but the price won't be as low, and you're seeing diminishing returns as it still runs the legacy 2019 CPU. Both the regular and plus tablets are sold out on Amazon USA.

I'll grab these tablets, de-bloat them and load standard Android OS with Playstore. Or at least get halfway there with toolkits like this one.

I'm told it's pretty simple to open up the Fire HD 10 line of tablets. We'll find out.

But didn't you start out saying it was $160? I'm confused! Anyway I'm thinking the lowest Canadian price before was $150, no? But of course Scamazon.ca has put prices up for a long time, the Fire sticks, for example, are insanely priced now, might as well get a Roku instead.

No they aren't? Change to US address, they won't ship Amazon devices to Canada from .com and vice versa--you have to ship them to the country of the site. If you have it set to ship to Canada it won't usually even show up on search.

Yeah toolbox looks super simple/straightforward. What's this opening up the tablet bit about though? What does that get you? Unlocked bootloader or something?

Just keep in mind that the XDA toolkit you linked will block future OTA updates from Amazon. Debloating is far from guaranteed or easy.

Yeah so a quick google reveals that Best Lie in US is selling these for $80 USD! Scamazon.ca can blow me!

Thanks to the damn border still being closed no way to get one either, but there will be sales later, surely. What's even more ridiculous is after mounting pressure from US saying they wanted to open the border blah blah, Canada decides to open it August 9th or whatever. I thought the US would reciprocate but sons of bitches they extended their ban on Canadian land-crossing until the 21st of August! And that's not even saying they are going to open it on the 21st, just it's closed until at least then. Are they serious?!?

You've asked quite a few questions and misread quite a few things I've said, @ES_Revenge.

I'm actually impressed, it's rather funny. Take it in stride, as I'm being lighthearted.

1. The 160 CAD deal I referenced was not from Amazon.ca originally.
2. By open up I mean, de-Amazon, the Amazon environment is a time warp to 2014.
3. No rooting or bootloader finagling is required.
4. BB USA was damn attractive, but after FX, reshipping, and relevant duties / taxes, it's close to the Amazon Canada price.

Ah I see. So better to get it from Amazon proper anyway, right? :) But the Best Lie US price is the kicker. I'm definitely not buying one of these until I can get to the US and just pick it up in person for $100 USD or less, which I'm sure will come. Heck by time border opens it'll probably be close to time for BF sales where I'm betting the Plus will be about that price given it's $120 in the sale right now over there.

Scamazon is just being greedy, if they'd sell the thing for like $120 CAD or something, I'd go ahead and buy one. While it's nice they brought us an actual colour finally, I'm still not getting over their insane pricing on things from the sticks to this. Sale price of 4K stick is like 2x the old sale price these days  not sure wtf they are thinking but as said they can blow me!

The entire point of these devices is to be cheaper than the competition. Why the heck anyone buys a Fire Stick (or tablet) "at a high price" like the merchant from RE4 (at least says he's going to do lol), is beyond me. Like who is going to buy Fire Stick 4K at $70 reg price and $60 sale when first off it was like $35 on sale before and secondly Roku Express 4K is like $45 on sale? Amazon.ca has lost the plot, I tell you. They're right out to lunch these days, just straight up trying to scam now.

I'm more critical of the other nick-knacks from Amazon, as their prices are more detached from reality.

The current Amazon tablet price isn't completely out to lunch.

I think I would've preferred seeing $149.99 CAD though. To get to $120 CAD, Canada would have to agree to the dissolution of it's borders and integration as the 51st state.

I personally prefer the Samsung tablet. Here are some of the pros of the Tab A over the Fire tablet.

- Tab A has aluminum back and frame; the Fire tablets had plastic backs in the past. Not sure about this one.
- 245.2 x 149.4 x 7.5 mm for Tab A vs. 247 x 166 x 9.2 mm for Fire, so Tab A is thinner and smaller
- Tab A supports nano sim
- Tab A is upgradable to Android 11, One UI 3.0 whereas Fire is Android 9.0. I believe the Tab A will also continue to get security updates due to Samsung's new update policy
- Tab A has better cameras
- Tab A has GPS
- Tab A has slimmer bezels
- Tab A has a cleaner OS interface
- Some apps may have problems with Fire's OS

Once again, a modern Samsung 10" tablet with 3GB RAM is $230 minimum, normally more.

The Amazon FIRE tablets are not the best in any area, but in a good way - they're a bargain on price for an ok tablet.

The biggest issue is that they run FireOS, which is based on Android, but not quite Android. You can install some missing Goggle components, including the Google Play Store, and most Android apps will run, but expect some occasional compatibility issues (like app notifications not working). If you have a mission-critical app for the tablet, make sure it runs on FireOS.

The above-mentioned XDA Fire Toolbox is a good way to install the Google extensions. It can also disable and hide Amazon bloatware, but can't remove it unless you root the tablet. Various methods for rooting and disabling Amazon auto-updates are offered, but they work erratically as Amazon keeps updating firmware to block them. You can also wipe FireOS and install Android, but again this can be hit-and-miss depending on your tablet and firmware version vs. the latest methods - you can end up bricking the tablet if you aren't careful.

The XDA Fire Toolbox has more value to U.S. buyers because they can buy an even cheaper ad-supported version of the Fire tablet that shows rotating ads on the home and sleep screens, and the Toolbox can try to remove the advertising and make it a regular Fire tablet.

They're a jack of all trades tablet. The price is certainly right in this pathetic COVID price environment. We're still in an inflationary environment recovering from a global supply shock.

You're generally correct, but I would lower the alarm slightly. The Toolkit is very good, community support is very strong, and the Fire HD 10 with De-Amazon'ed Android or fresh installed Android is very good as well. The risk is also minimal unless you're doing a full wipe and re-install. There's something to be said about going with one of the most popular widely available, widely supported, 10" Android tablets on the market. This tablet has the best community support of any Android tablet out there.

That's enough for me to opt-in, that and the minimum $80 savings over the next equivalent Samsung tablet.

The one reason I prefer a Samsung tablet is that it supports family link which you can't get to work on amazon tablets

And for how long does Amazon guarantee OS security updates? Is security even on their radar?
