More about the newest Nvidia budget GPU

Equipped with the GeForce MX150, the Aspire comes with a brand-new GPU based on Nvidia’s GeForce GT 1030 core. It supports DirectX 12, runs at up to 1,683 MHz, and it is capable of addressing up to 2,048 MB of GDDR5 VRAM. In our 3DMark benchmarks, the MX150 performed slightly better than a GeForce GTX 950M.

Since it supports Optimus, the Aspire alternates between the dedicated MX150 and the CPU’s integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 GPU. Generally speaking, the more efficient Intel GPU is used for those applications that don’t require the MX150’s oomph. The system automatically switches between the two based on current demand.

I wish more vendors would get on the sub $800 8250u bandwagon. Acer is releasing some very competitive models on paper but i'd really prefer to get something like a dell, asus, hp, msi etc

something i remember that was posted a few days ago, excellent if you don't need the powerful gpu and ssd. Save $100 USD + build is also lighter.

RFDSupporter wrote: How does this Asus one compare to the Acer one? It is US$80 more with a bigger screen and i7 7th gen CPU but, with discrete display card... Not sure if it will overheat under such slim profile.

i7-7500U 2.7GHz is only 2 cores and 7th gen. 940MX is last gen. MX150 about 40% faster YMMV depending on games and settings. 1TB HDD is not an SSD.

So not really better if it costs more to ship and import $184.33 compared to the Acer is $118.

thanks OP ... have been looking for a balance of some gaming ability and basic laptop functions ... was interested in the dell gaming 15 platform ... but that's 4-5 hundred dollars more all-in ... for the next level or so up. I don't really need that ... just researching if Acer has been an okay brand lately.
He .... looka lika MAN!

Not sure if anything has changed for Acer recently, but ages ago I have used Acer laptops and I tell myself to avoid that brand's laptop ever.

I am eying on this one since past week - Acer Swift 3 14" and it's the same price for the the 15" Acer Swift 3 15". Although the 15" version is temporarily out of stock.
Looking back at the ultrabook like profile for the Swift series, would like to lean on it more unless someone requires a DVD drive for that added bulk with the E series.

Why not wait for the coffee lake variations to be released?

It probably will bring these models price down significantly.

So were kaby lake/skylake too.

They will eventually come down the line to laptops as well.
I would dare to assume unless something else come along that would make them just skip over it all together.

The Acer Swift 3 14" got a price slash of $70.
Now it goes for $729.99 + $114.71 shipping and import fees. In all $844.7 USD.

I bought an Acer five years ago not expecting much and it's been a great laptop for the price.

My son bought this Acer about a year ago:
Acerlaptop

It's been rock solid, I really like the backlit keyboard.

Same generally build quality as your son's. Acer have really improved. Folks need to get over the Acer of old that haunt their memories. Hyundai and Samsung in their early days were crap too. I have a 2009 Acer 3810T that still runs perfectly to this day. That's almost 9 years old. I have an open box Acer 2015 Nitro from Newegg that is perfect too now for 2 years.

I don't actually think this is a shitfest on the acer brand name per se.

But just the brain worm of "You get what you pay for" analogy.

I've always had the thought of acer as a lesser brand to get when sony and toshiba were selling their laptops at the same specs at over $250 more.

BUt of course you were paying for the brand name and the logo saying "Oh, you have a Sony!?" reaction when at the airport.

NObody would say "Oh, you have an Acer!?" in that same situation. I've always known them to be a budget brand, a go-to cheap replacement when your current on just died.

That is my take on how this thread is going with the last three newbie postings all at the same time defending the acer brand name for one reason or another.
