Got my GCR $60 after 3 business days. Instant approval for Amex. Going to dump my tuition/rent into it. Looking forward to trying out the Amex perks that I always see on RFD. Thanks OP!

The GCR CB works out to 9.025 % ( 400+60-99=361. 361/4000 )
15% of GCR rebates for referral. should give you 400 + 60 + 9 - 99 = 370. 370/4000 = 9.25%
[FS] SportChek GC at 87%

Went and purchased one big ticket item over $4,000, Base points and bonus points showed within a couple of days. Pleasantly surprised to see that base points stack with bonus so you're getting $480 on $4,000 spent and not just $400. Add the $60 in from GCR and that's $540. That's HOT! Thanks OP and thanks AMEX!!!

Sorry if the stacking was already mentioned earlier but I haven't read the entire thread.
The first purchase posted on my card with 2% base points and 8% bonus points, so without the points stacking as you described. My purchase was for < $4000, so maybe there is some glitch in the calculation if the first purchase is > $4000, or you got lucky.

Applied for this card and was immediately approved. What’s almost laughable is the $1,000 credit limit. A tad bit insulting, if you ask me.

I called Amex this morning and got nowhere. Of course the initial calculation is automated and I need to wait 48 hours before they can even discuss it.

My credit score is excellent and have only a mortgage as debt.

I was hoping to take advantage of the 10% cashback on $4,000 spend as we have big purchases next month, but $1,000 won’t get me anywhere fast.

I may cancel the card outright by end of next week if the limit can’t change.

Anyone else had this same experience?

P.S.

C/P from OP:

Amex SimplyCash Preferred

10% cashback for up to $4,000 MSR for the first 4 months of spend.

New offer starting September 2, 2020

1) That works out to $400 cashback

2) As of Sept 13, 2020, GCR offers $60 for applying for this card.

3) Have to pay the $99 annual fee

= your net gain is $361 on first $4,000 spent.
($400 + $60 - $99)

2% cashback on anything after the welcome offer.

---------

I count my net gain on first $4000 spent like this though:

$361 ($400 + $60 - $99) - $80 (- 2% cash back from $4000 spent that I would earn with my Brim World Elite MasterCard anyhow from that money spent, without having to pay $99 fee) = $281

So I count my net gain to be $281 then ... :)

You can always prepay your card in the amount of $3000 before making your $4000 purchase(s) instead of cancelling the card ... if they won't accommodate you with a higher credit limit.

I wonder if it maybe had something to do with you paying for your purchase via PayPal, rather than paying for your purchase with the AMEX card of yours some other way ...

I think amex is usually tight with limits if it's your first card with them

My purchase was also via PayPal, but no stacking applied. Based on @cymrules's datapoint, Amex could be awarding a maximum of $400 bonus cash back on $5000 in purchases, rather than a maximum $320 bonus cash back on $4000. We'll see what happens when others reach >$4k spending on the card.

They issued you a separate SCP card though, right? Have you tested to see if it earns 10% CB, or you're going by what a rep mentioned to you? Or you got an email? Has this happened to others. It's new to me.

Based on @cymrules's datapoint, the full/maximum $400 was given on that $8790 purchase, and as well the 2% on the full $8790 ($175.81).

I wonder if it's because of one large initial purchase that goes over the $4000 cap, and thus triggers the remaining balance as well as the front-end $4000 amount (for full $8790) to get the 2% CB. If this is the case, optimally it would be best to spend $4001 as the first purchase, causing the $1 extra to get 2% and then the tag-along front-end $4000 to also get the 2%. Or, maybe the remaining portion on that one single purchase must be more than $4000, to trigger it.

For me, I'd stop at $4000, if I had $6000 upcoming purchases. Then put the remaining $2000 on another 10% cash back card. There's plenty to play with that offer better than 2% return.
