[AMEX] Membership Rewards Tiers or Levels????

I just found out AMEX had Rewards Tiers (or Levels). I found out the Cobalt credit card was in the "Membership Rewards Select Tier". This makes Cobalt points impossible to transfer to Aeroplan. My Business Edge seems to be unable to transfer to Aeroplan either.

However which card is under which tier is not explained anywhere on their website or their terms and conditions.

Basically there are 4 tiers:

Membership Rewards First™ Tier
Membership Rewards Tier
Membership Rewards Select Tier
Choice by Membership Rewards Tier

I found this buried in the terms and conditions PDF and nothing more:

Does someone know where to find more info about this?

This is the current system and the chart is going to be out of date in several weeks.

MR First are earned by Amex Platinum and Business Platinum cards. Otherwise, they are 99% the same as Membership Rewards and are interchangeable.

MR Select are earned by Amex Cobalt and Business Edge. They cannot be transferred to airline programs like Aeroplan, but they can be transferred to hotel programs such as Marriott Bonvoy. *The Amex Cobalt will switch to Membership Rewards on August 16th*. Annoyingly, Amex also calls these "Membership Rewards".

MR Choice...I am guessing this is only for the Amex Choice card. But this card is being switched to Amex Green later this fall.

MR Select are earned by Amex Cobalt and Business Edge.
Thanks! Where did you get this info from? It's not anywhere on their website!

Where did you get this info from? What about Business Edge?

I guess I'm simply unlucky, the two AMEX cards I have are these two!

Here you go Emilio:

Edit: supposedly Edge MR-S points are also changing to MR Points, however, I can't find the source and nothing definitive has been published by Amex; see my next post for more

How sure are you of this? If it's not 100% sure, I guess I'll simply move my points from my Business Edge card to my Cobalt card before August 16th! Smiling Face With Open Mouth
Hmm, I remember reading something about Edge Card and can't find it, so I am going to edit my previous post, as I can't find the source!!

I found this about the Choice Card (see below link) ... and these 3 cards, Cobalt, Choice and Edge currently award MR-S points, so maybe it was just a guess for Edge, based on info provided by Amex for personal cards, Cobalt and Choice.

American Express has announced that its flagship lifestyle credit card, the American Express Cobalt Card, will be undergoing a transformation as of August 16, 2021.

The card will get a new earning rate of 3x MR points on streaming services, mobile device insurance of up to $1,000, and – most significantly – the ability to transfer MR points to airline partners. In exchange, the monthly fee is increasing by 30% to a reported $12.99 per month.

There was a recent promotion for transferring MR-S (Select) to Bonvoy, but I hadn't met the MSR for the Cobalt card, but I'll be pretty happy if they'll transfer to Aeroplan, etc.
I also won't get the increased monthly fees until next year, so I can enjoy the added benefits for free until they increase the price.

I did transfer out all my MR-S from my business edge, so I'll be sad if I missed out, but since there hasn't been a change to the annual fee, I'm not sure if it will get the added transfer benefits

That has NOT been confirmed and I remain extremely skeptical that that will be the case. I am much more likely to believe that Cobalt will continue to earn MR Select, and that MR Select will get some new limited transferability to airline programs. Like maybe a lesser transfer ratio (2:1 instead of 1:1) or a cap on the number that can be transferred in a year (10k-20k maybe)

Otherwise, if Cobalt is getting the full MR benefits of the Amex charge cards with unlimited airline transferability, then it will have 25% better earnings than the US Amex Gold card (which earns 4x MR on grocery and restaurant), for HALF its annual fee.

Ya, sorry, I won't believe that until I see it.

Based on the paperwork I received from Amex about the changes, you are correct, Cobalt will continue to collect MR-S. The major blogs like Rewards Canada and POT seem to have sources that indicate transfer to Aeroplan will be 1-1. RWC has a stellar track record with Amex so I am willing to believe them. That doesn’t mean I disagree with you - I also want to see it confirmed by Amex. I suspect the reason for keeping MR-s separate from MR is that it allows the Platinum and “New” gold card to rollout some new MR specific transfer partners.

Thanks. I’m not sure what that guy is talking about. I don’t remember MR First and MR Select ever being specified on the Amex website. You had to go to the MR Program terms and conditions for that info, and that hasn’t changed.

Not sure exactly what he's talking about, but I know when you go to the Membership Rewards page, it would say MR First or MR depending on whether you were looking at points earned from a Platinum card or a Gold card. At least that's how it used to be when I had an Amex.

I think the post is referring to viewing the points balance on the redemptions Amex page. MR First has been removed for almost 2 years now, and both Cobalt and regular MR just shows "Membership Rewards". They still have two drop down menus, so there's definitely still a difference between the two.

Um it's 100% confirmed. I and thousands of other cobalt holders got a snail mail outlining it.

Dunno why they snail mailed, but yep. Not in the mood to scan it in, so you can believe me or not, but yea it's 100% confirmed.

And forget US cards.. (apples to oranges for one).. But, it will make even canadian platinum obsolete, since it's bonus category is also dining. Does it make sense? Not much, but nothing amex canada does lately makes much sense to me.

And yea US cards aren't comparable because they have like ~15 airlines that transfer at 1:1: and a lot better ones than canada will ever get. We only have 2. Aeroplan and Avios. Rest aren't 1:1. And air canada are a bunch of criminals. So that leaves only avios.

Though I'm sure ca platinum will get some revamp at some point like the US platinum just got. The 50k + $200 they offered existing users to hold the card is just a hold off retention offer while they think up a new strategy for it.
