Second time in a row. Whomp Whomp!

At the end of February 2020, we identified that an unexpected amount of guest information may have been accessed using the login credentials of two employees at a franchise property.
Ugh! Talk about password management with regards to weak credentials. Probably due to a phishing attempt with or without malware infection. Hope it is not insider threat.
Proud to be an Indian.

I suspect the attackers are getting through Marriott franchisee locations with weak network and security infrastructure. Of course they won't disclose how the breaches occur. Or like OP says, it could be semi insider job, front desk staff has access to quite a bit of info in my opinion.

Has Marriott ever provided free credit monitoring for the impacted individuals? Seems like the right thing to do.
