Any carrier have WiFi tethering plans?

All,

I was reading about Republic Wireless in the USA.
They offer plans where if you are at home or near WiFi, you automatically use that instead of the cell network. Cool concept.

I dont think so, but do we have anyone in Canada that does this?

There is also a 2011 thread about this.

Wouldn't that be similar to Shaw wifi or no?

If it's advanced, I wouldn't expect Canadians to have it.

I just checked and not the same.

What is neat with Republic's product is that when you are on any WiFi connection, both your calls and data are routed via WiFi. The Shaw solution seems to be only data and only on Shaw hotspots.

What Republic Wireless does extra is use the WiFi networks that you can already connect to (which means it has to be a public WiFi or you must know the password), to make calls. Use a VOIP app. Problem solved. Fongo is free, $2/month if you want text messaging.

How can I make sure that I am connected to WiFi all the time?
First, make sure you set up your phone to access the WiFi networks you frequent. Your phone will remember those networks and connect to them automatically. Many public hotspots don’t require any password at all. But for those that do, you’ll need to set them up on your first visit.
