AT&T requires you to have six months of service before they will unlock the phone for you.

T-Mobile will unlock the phone as long as you use the reload card on your T-Mobile number the device is associated with.

I take it a phone from Simple Mobile can't be unlocked to have it work in Canada?

I'm sure it can be unlocked. It depends upon their policy.

You can always call them and ask.

You could look on craigslist for a Verizon-issued phone. All are unlocked .. it's a question of bands that your Canadian carriers access. All my phones are iPhones that I bought through Verizon on various promos that they carried (without early termination fees attached).
